This is amazing news. Are they coming in directly themselves or buying someone over or partnering with someone?

AFAIK any outside company if wants to setup operation here then needs to enter in a JV with an Indian company. I may be wrong but :S

I've shopped many times directly on Amazon and have never been disappointed. Couple of issues that I had have been resolved keeping customer satisfaction in mind. I am one happy customer. However unless they have a range of products that is close to their US store, having operations in India doesn't make sense.

If they just buy an existing firm, there might be no change in the way we get service. Example if they buy Flipcart or Letsbuy then you might face the same trouble you're facing now since people working in the old organisation will still work there but under a different name. And they (people) will work in their usual old way (indian style). Amazon cant make people work differently, right?

I thought Filpkart is a good website, i personally never had any issues with them. Anyways, Amazon with years of experience in Retail/SCM would be a competition to all those existing e-comm websites! Hopefully the product range similar to their US Website.

I doubt we will get US pricing cause of the business structure and taxation duties in India. Hoping for stellar service and excellent ease of use. With a dedicated voice contact center and real-time manifesto updates.

Informed customers = delighted consumers. :)

If not the pricing atleast all/most of the products on amazon US should be available here :) along with warranty for the same :P.

Great news.

I think the article in TOI mentioned that they want to buy Flipkart / Letsbuy before launching but it sounds like its not a requirement so maybe FDI rules for multi brand retail have been relaxed.

I doubt it. That the US Amazon.com warehouse or supply chain commodities would be available in India. They will set up a separate infrastructure here and base the inventory on that with their existent e-commerce model.

I emailed Amazon offering suggestions for their India ops. I got a very nice reply from them thanking me for the suggestions and welcoming more. Some of the things I suggested were-

1) Support for Mp3 downloads

2) Support digital game downloads. Yes, you can do this ATM but it costs FOREX - I want to pay in Rs.

3) Allow users to buy items from Amazon US/UK yet pay in Rs. while delivering via Amazon India

4) Enable "Amazon Prime" for items bought from Amazon India

Email them using your Amazon account and put your suggestions forward. It cant do any harm. For all you know, they may well decide to implement them if a lot of people make the same suggestions.... :)

IINM, Amazon's model is such that their customer care numbers are never highlighted. Most of their interaction happens through email.

So there is no way to talk to a human with Amazon..?

Sure there are.

Apart from Email, you can choose Live Chat or Call a telephone no. for Amazon USA.

The telephone no. is possibly a US number so you have pay for the international call charges.

Chat is fine though you will usually have to wait about 10-15 minutes in queue.

Personally I find the email option good enough because their email response time is reasonably fast (usually within 8-24 hours).

I did try the live chat option once but I just didnt have the patience to wait 13 minutes in queue.

Amazon UK only has Email or Phone options.

^ Can you share the Amazon numbers? There are some numbers on the web, but I couldn't find any directly on their website.

Note that I have never used them personally but they should work as they are from the Amazon US site. Here you go -

International customers can call 1-206-266-2992

1-866-216-1072 is their automated customer service system no.

They also have a "call back" service but India is not in the list of countries covered.

Ah, that's bad, we could have a better (?) Flipkart if Amazon had acquired them :)

flipkart is already awesome & I am sure it will grow like Amazon one day. They have introducing so many sections, recently they started home appliances. I am happy that Amazon is here but will be more if Indian company Flipkart grows like that :)
