AMD 65nm roadmap revealed

65nm Athlon 64 is codenamed 'Brisbane', 65nm Sempron is codenamed 'Sparta'

65nm Athlon 64 codenamed 'Brisbane' and the 65nm Athlon FX processors will debut early next year, followed by 65nm Semprons codenamed 'Sparta' in the second-half of 2007.

Coming sooner is the Athlon FX-62, due in June alongside the dual-core Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and 5200+.

Code names :

The 65nm Athlon 64 is codenamed 'Brisbane' - though whether for the Australian city or the San Francisco suburb of the same name isn't clear.

The 65nm Sempron is codenamed 'Sparta'. Both supporting AMD's Socket AM2 interconnect.

Unlike Sparta, Brisbane is a dual-core chip and will form the basis for future Athlon 64s and Athlon 64 FXs.

Launch dates :

Socket AM2 will be launched in June 2006, at the Computex show in Taiwan.

AMD will also introduce the 2.8GHz, dual-core FX-62, along with the X2 5000+ and the X2 5200+ both clocked at 2.6GHz, but with 1MB and 2MB of L2 cache, respectively. The X2s have a power envelope of 89W; the FX-62, 125W.

AMD will also introduce Windsor-based X2s at today's 3800+, 4200+, 4400+, 4600+ and 4800+ speed grades, the slides claim.

In line with recent AMD pronouncements, these chips will feature the company's virtualisation system, 'Pacifica'.
Phase outs :

Single-core Athlon 64s will be phased out at the end of 2006, while the upcoming 'Orleans' core - again, bringing DDR 2 to the single-core Athlon 64 - may be phased out during H1 2007.

The upcoming 'Windsor' core, which will bring dual-channel DDR 2 and AM2 support to the FX family, will survive through 2007.

Nice news.

AM2 Launched in June.

That means itll be available surely in quantities by July. Hmm.. Sad!

Hehe so AM2 in June, too bad for GF :P

Also I don't think it'll reach India in proper quatities before September/October.

SiS has let the cat out of the bag. Yesterday, it announced half a dozen chipsets all of which will support AMD's Socket AM2 microprocessors - none of which have yet been formally introduced by the chip maker - which will ship in Q2, SiS said.

SiS' AM2 line-up includes two desktop parts and four mobile chipsets, with one discrete offering in each category. The company said the chipsets would support AMD's Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 FX, Athlon 64, Sempron and Opteron processors.

"The new generation AMD Socket AM2 CPUs include an embedded DDR 2 memory controller that supports up to 333MHz DDR2-667 memory and dual channel technology," the chipset maker said.

The desktop range comprises the SiS756 and SiS761GX, the latter incorporating the company's DirectX 9-compatible Mirage 1 graphics core. Both support external graphics cards through a 16x PCI Express slot.

The SiS756 will also ship in a mobile form, joined by the SiSM760, SiSM761GX and the SiSM760GX. The two 760 parts contain a Mirage 2 graphics core and lack external graphics card support. The 761 has a Mirage 1 engine and can drive a 16x PCI Express slot.

SiS said AMD's Socket AM2 parts "will be available on the second quarter of 2006", stressing that the chipsets' release this week "paves the way" for the new AMD CPUs. The chipsets themselves will ship in Q2, SiS said.

"SiS and AMD have built a strong and long-lasting strategic partnership," the chipset maker said, though how AMD will react to this week's bean spillage remains to be seen..

As socket AM2 will be launched around june-july. so post the related new here rather than creating a new thread.

so here are some
http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20060215195420.html

The long-awaited launch of the new reincarnation of AMD Athlon 64 X2 and Athlon 64 FX processors for the Socket AM2 that will allow using DDR2 SDRAM is scheduled to take place at Computex 2006 that will be open in Taipei, Taiwan, in June. Note that the first mainboards for Socket AM2 designed by AMD’s partners will be demonstrated already at the European CeBIT show in March 2006.

AMD is expected to launch two dual-core CPUs for Socket AM2 on June 2006: Athlon 64 X2 5000+ and Athlon 64 FX-62. Both processors will be based on F core revision working at 2.6GHz and 2.8GHz respectively. This way, the new AMD core will not only acquire DDR2 memory support, but also will increase the frequency potential of the dual-core AMD processors without switching to new production technology. Just as the previous E core revision, the upcoming F core revision will still be manufactured with 90nm SOI process.

i think power dissipation will be reduced :)

One of the most interesting things about the new processors is their heat dissipation. Dual-core CPUs with F core stepping and up to 2.6GHz frequency and 2x1MB L2 cache will boast maximum 89W TDP. The today’s processors with similar technical specifications demonstrate 110W TDP at 2.2-2.4GHz core clock rate. Although one of the recent Athlon 64 4400+ modifications with 2.2GHz clock speed boasts 89W TDP.

Old Tapei will be a grand place to launch a few of the new AMD marchitectures. We will see the Live® (Liver) platform launch, the socket AM2 launch. Last but certanly not least will be the dual core Athlon 5000+ and the dual core for gamers Athlon FX 62 launch. AMD will announce these marchitectures on the 6th of June at Computex 2006.

It seems that both 5000+ and FX62 come as socket AM 2 only things.

Are you sure of those clocks, because i remember reading an article that AMD would be changing the base HT speed to 266 Mhz and the fx-62 would thus be a 2.66 Ghz part. The x2 5000+ would just be a rebadged fx-60 in AM2 form.

^^^Errr I thought it was 333MHz... Well good to know that Ver F Chips are not going to hold back on Mem performance and also that AMD did a respin and crished the bug.....

looks like i was correct about DDR2 :)

The Socket AM2 generation is certainly not going to outperform comparable Socket 939 (DDR400) processors at DDR2-667 memory speeds-see our benchmarks. This is why AMD decided to wait for DDR2-800 and launch in June.

EDIT:- guys also chk out the comments people are saying that DDR2 was not at specified 667 speeds :-/

Yes Rahul but the point is that 333 HTT and DDR2 800 (both are AM2 features) are not in that preview and that is exactly what AMD is aiming/betting on to keep them ahead of Intel. Cant say for sure that they will manage it but I think it will be close.

Tom's Hardware:

As already mentioned, the memory is suspected to suffer from a performance bug, which may be true or simple a matter of the early product stage. The upcoming processor (revision F) will fix any of this; the dual core version is being shipped to motherboard partners starting this week, with single cores to follow in the middle of May.

EDIT: For a Dec'05 testing setup it is doing very good and I think after Rev F Processors with improved Mem Controller, improvments with DDR2-667 will also be seen. Not to say DDR2-800 will be much better.

that right harshal ..... as people are guessing the ram was probably at 400Mhz with 4-4-4 timings ...... anyways lets wait for the final review :)
