AMD Monday will slash prices by as much as 30 percent on its Athlon 64 X2 dual-core microprocessor series, according to a system builder with a long-standing business relationship with the chip giant.

The system builder, who preferred to remain anonymous, said manufacturer prices for the top-of-the-line Athlon 64 X2 6000+ would drop from $241-per-unit to about $170. The price of an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ would be cut from about $90 to $69, he said.

AMD would not comment on price cuts for its Athlon line.

"AMD does not comment on rumors or speculation," the company said in a statement.

Fry's Electronics July 2 listed the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at $169.99 on its Web site. That listing represented an at-cost offering of the chip ahead of the scheduled July 9 price cut, according to the system builder.

Fry's had removed the $169.99 listing as of July 5, when the retailer listed the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ at $229.99. That particular chip was tagged by Fry's as "Sold Out."

this is actually required if amd still wants to be a part of the market.

the upcoming intel price cuts cud have influenced this...

Right now, IMO they should concentrate on the one are Intel doesnt have a good hold over with C2D's; the absolute VFM market and this

The price of an Athlon 64 X2 4000+ would be cut from about $90 to $69, he said.

is a god step in that direction, maybe a 5000+ Brisbane at $80 :D

^^ Not really under their control actually, loads of things happen wrong and go haywire when mergers happen, THIS AMD debacle maybe looked down in the future as one of those. It'll take some time for all of it to sort out and the advantages of both teams merging together, till then AMD will be in a loss and AMD knows it.

Also loads goes wrong during R&D, and hence the delays, delays and the newer proccy's prolly not scaling well in clock speeds.

AMD to Can Single-core, Cut Dual-core Prices on Monday

Bruised but not broken, AMD fires off another volley of price cuts across Core 2 Duo's bow

With only a month until the most anticipated AMD product launch in five years, the company is pulling out all the stops to get competitive before the Back to School buying season.

The AMD-Intel price war, now almost into its second year, was cited as one of the contributing factors to the $611 million dollar loss AMD posted in the fiscal first quarter of 2007. Following that loss came a 400 employee headcount reduction and a $2.2 billion cash-for-stock deal.

Eh? Where is 5000+ on the list ... Price cuts are good. But AMD should release new processor soon.. Before they loose more market share

High ends are usually bit costly....I will suggest anyone to grab a 4000+ Brisbane (10.5x multi).....even a decent 250HTT(which almost any mobo can do) will land up it up at 2.6 Ghz .....on a good mobo with 300HTT 3Ghz is a mouthwatering proposition at arnd 70$ ( will be arnd 3k +tax )

Here is the list

The X2 4000+ looks to be the sweetest IMO, just 3k and performance close to a E4300@stock speed atkeast, and when OC'd with a good m/b should reach 3Ghz easily, where performance is close to E6600 all at a cost of 3k + 3k for the m/b.

Once again AMD shines in the VFM segment. :hap2:
