AMD may only be known for its processing and graphics products, but it appears it might be branching out somewhat, extending its influence, or at least trying to, in the RAM segment.

Seeing as how Intel has been doing its best to establish a foothold in other IT segments besides CPUs and chipsets, it is not overly odd to hear that AMD might be attempting the same.

Granted, Advanced Micro Devices does not seem to be targeting the same area as its arch-rival (Intel has been developing SSDs, among other things).

Instead, the Sunnyvale, California-based corporation is working on DDR3 RAM (random access memory) modules.

The fact that AMD is making RAM is not exactly a new thing, since the outfit has been at it for quite a bit already, but the company might be trying to get them more out in the open now.

To start with, three 2 GB DIMMs have been unveiled, carrying the brand name Radeon, the one AMD uses for its video solutions.

Obviously, this is a move meant primarily to get some early attention for the modules that are, all in all, not overly impressive, performance-wise, though they are quite cheap at least.

With a clock speed 1,600 MHz, they won't really pose a threat to real powerhouses, like kits from Mach Xtreme or Kingston (which were even overclocked to over 3 GHz).

For those that want some actual details, Advanced Micro Devices put together three 2 GB modules, each aimed, naturally, at a different set of applications.

There is the Enterprise module, whose specifications have, alas, not been disclosed as of yet, though this, thankfully, does not hold true for the other two.

The Ultra Pro Gaming memory works at 1,600 MHz and 11-11-11 latencies, while the Entertainment solution is slower (1,333 MHz) and features latencies of 9-9-9.

Japanese stores should already have the 1,333 MHz one up for order, at $20. Availability details for the other two are pending.

Ultra Pro and 11/11/11?
A G.Skill 2GBNT module (no sinks) rated at 1333 9-9-9 does 1600 9-9-9 without any extra voltage at all. And it's sold as dirt - current price is ~800 a stick.

Hoping for some challenges for Gskill & Corsair. AMD might soon launch gaming series rams and might answer the current leaders. But i m pretty sure it wont provide a 10yrs-lifetime warranty though but just 3-5 yrs. M excited for their ram avatars and various series.

FTW lets be in the news loop.

^ Seriously! :S

Also, this is surprising. I expected AMD to venture out, but didn't think it would be RAM.

They should ideally name it Rameon else Radeon sounds as if the dimms are used for boosting their GPUs.

Why not when Mitsubishi can have CD/DVD media and Hyundai can have RAMs and Intel can have SSDs.

Expecting Sauce/ketchup and bathing soap from Intel soon as an answer to this :p

AMD could make ssds as well. They had a memory division as well called Spansion.

these rams seems to be made by oem who is making it under brandname of radeon.

its nice move and its damn cheap if you see ncix deal.

Mitsubishi is a group which includes companies in all kinds of fields. Motors, plastics, paper, steel, oil, banking and even Nikon comes under the group. ;)

ATi fanbois take note!

To get the best out of your CFX setup, you must have AMD branded memory! This will give you a 50% performance boost on all of your games and other programs! Now if you are truly a ATi fan, don't forget our AMD theme case, mouse pad, tissue box, keyboard, and mouse!

Oh, Ruby is not included.

On second thoughts, RAM? Naah. Make even better CPU/GPU stuff and give our dearest frenemy intel a nice KITB. LOL

After rams, yeah I suppose they could make SSDs as well. Maybe SSD was their initial thought, but considering Intel already is doing really well in that department, they didn't want to fall flat against Intel again. :P

Nvidia has its mobile business (Tegra)

AMD can't step into that low power business and thus decided to go with the desktop parts.. :P

Guys we may soon get to see some Black Edition Rams from AMD with great heatsink which would be able to overclock well and outperform its rivals high performance RAMs... And as AMD has finally entered into DRAM market we wouldn't have to go on a search to find AMD platform compatible RAMs while building AMD rigs... I think AMD would release Radeon Rams which would be compatible with every AMD chipset motherboard... Actually i wouldn't mind buying AMD RAMs if AMD would release RAMs with great heatsink and 5 to 10yrs warranty... Lifetime warranty wouldn't hurt too... :P We should expect good rather than bad from a very innovative company like AMD... This is just the beginning i am sure that AMD would release some high performance RAMs pretty soon to keep its competitors on their toes just the way AMD keeps Intel and Nvidia on their toes by releasing high performance CPUs/GPUs at affordable prices... :)

Amd has chips for the mobile phone market as well. Imageon or something. Google it.

This is really unexpected thing AMD did. i never thought AMD would released there own RAM!!! :O

+1

Hope this will be a great Hit if they release at a lower Cost and Black Edition Ram tooo :) I will get it.....

true.. shouldn't they get their act together in the CPU business before venturing out into other markets..

I am an AMD fan, so.. when is the real competition coming???

Hoping that AMD plans to be more than just the "Budget King"

Which was taken over by Qualcomm and is brought out under the name of Adreno. ;)
