CPU/Mobo AMD equivalent of E5200+G31-S2L?

I have built several Intel-based systems for my friends, most of them not into any gaming. So, a E5200+G31 based Intel-based system was an automatic choice.

Now I am looking to build an equivalent system around the AMD processor. In other words, proccy+mobo shd be within 6k (or a slight increase in price with a huge increase in performance). Problem is i have zero knowledge wrt the AMD line of processors and mobos. Absolutely no gaming will be there, though sometimes it might be used as a digital audio workstation. Will not be needing an external graphics card, though an hdmi connection on the mobo will be a bonus.

Your help will be sincerely appreciated.

Thx Piyush and PoBoy!

Biostar 785GE seems to be the preferred mobo. Any major diff between A785GE and TE785GE 128M? In other words, is the latter worth paying 600-800 extra?

Also, how is Biostar as a brand? As good as Asus and Gigabyte?

biostar 785 mobos are really good, and they seems as good as Asus/Gigabyte.

TA 785GE 128M has much more oc options, better heatsinks, T series overclocking options in Bios, and required utilities for windows, and idle power phase switching for power saving etc.

Also if you are using IGP, then its one of the best IGP till date. DX 10.1 HD 4200. Also you can OC the IGP, and with better heatsinks[on TA785] you can oc to higher levels and match performance or even beat cards like HD 4350.

X2 240 is really cheap @ 2.8k now

TA 785 GE 128M : 3.8k

thx for the useful post dominator! u seem to have sold me on the TA785GE mobo. when i looked at the spec sheets of the two on biostar site and compared, it looked the only diff were

1. 16bg capacity for RAM instead of 8gb

2. 6 sata connectors instead of 4

3. 3 usb headers instead of 2

But u were able to bring out more features of TA785 mobo than the Biostar website itself!

Hi

I am also thinking of buying the same motherboard but as Biostar is comparatively new in India, what has been the experience of the members when dealing with problems with the RMA Guys ?
Do they replace the boards easily or try to blame the fault on you ?

In my location, RMAing Biostar is as easy as ny other brands. DUn know about other locations.

Nowadays biostar AMD chip mobos are really good. My TA 790 GXB A2+ is serving really well. Did 4Ghz+ on it after quad unlocking X2 550. Nothin more can be expected from other expensive boards like Asus and gigabyte, though biostar doesnt have pwm coolers.

Unfortunately, there is nothing for the AMD platform that can compete with the price:performance of the Gigabyte G31 motherboards.
The Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 w/ DDR3 could've been that board, but local distris./dealers somehow thought it was appropriate to charge 5-6k for it when the board retails for under 4k on newegg(thereby killing all the appeal).

Some good alternatives have been suggested above though...

G31 has its own limitations

* micro atx [most of them]

* crappy IGP

* PCIE X16 1.0 rather than 2.0 standard in other mobos.

* only good with budget proccys[like E5xxx and 7xxx]

+ives

* good overclocker

* stable

* excellent pricing

785G mobos, even though micro ATX, has good IGP, PCIE 2.0 [even hybrid CF], ACC for unlocking, and supports even AMD's highest proccy as good as a 790 DDR2 mobo.

^ He's right in the sense that there are no good AMD boards for that magic ~2.5k mark. AFAIK the older nForce boards are the only ones available in that segment, while even the G31 is relatively newer.

Thanks Otpsurvive for the link.

I am sold on AMD II X2 240 + Biostar TA785GE.

Any suggestions for Cabinet+Power Supply? I guess a simple Zebronics Bijli would do. (No GFX card, no internal sound card). Or shd I put up a new thread in the peripheral section?

Thanks guys for the awesome AMD+Biostar combo solution!
