hello friends although i'm lookin for help on an already "much debated topic" but still what i read regarding this topic i was not satisfied with their views as most of them had biased views
Although i'm a bit more inclined towards AMD but i've heard from many that it heats up too early and it is basically suitable for gamers(but i'm not a gamer) so i need help from some sensible ppl
Actually I’m planning to buy a laptop preferably an HP one (or if u can suggest a better one in India).My budget is around 50000 to 55000 INR .I have chosen some must have things in the laptop that I’m specifying below:

Processor :Intel core duo or AMD turion (my biggest confusion)
L2 cache: >1MB
RAM: >=512MB

HDD: >=60GB
Screen size: 15†or 15.4â€
Optical drive: DVD rom(combo) or DVD writer
OS: win Xp or home or media center or Linux(actually I want one which won’t give any problem on installing linux) and should be win vista compatible
LAN :integrated wireless lan ,Bluetooth etc

These r some of the main features that I want to have in the laptop
One more confusion that I have is b/w HP or others in terms of servicing i.e. which one provides better service in India
But my main confusion is between processors actually I’m more inclined towards AMD turion than towards core duo but i’m scared if I would be able to install linux or other softwares on it so please regarding this as well

So please reply asa possible that is which model from which company is a better option for me

Dude, on my search for a lappie for my friend i found this config.. seems excellent to me
If you wanna limit your budget, you can go for this..
Compaq V3029

else in your stated 50K to 55K budget there are lotsa options..

If you're options are confined only to HP's, then there is only one model you can get the Turion Processor with and that is the Compaq 3029AU.

The upside is that it is dual core and is 64 bit, just incase you want 64 bit support in the future.

On the flip side, heat is an issue and ofcourse power consumption. The Turion X2 consumes significantly more power than the Core Duo processors. Most people I have spoken to say it is quite a sizeable difference. That's another thing you might want to consider plus ofcourse the fact that it comes with only 512KB L2 cache as opposed to the 2MB L2 cache with the Core Processors. Performance wise, I don't really know how big the gap is between the two, but I assume it is significant.

On the other hand, all the HP and Compaq models are outfitted with the GMA950 graphics chipset, a rather low performance GPU except for the Compaq 3029AU which comes with the Go6150 and the HP dv2117TX which comes with a Go7200 GPU, both of which are much better compared to the GMA950.

Please keep in mind that the above refers to the 14.1" series of HP and Compaq

If you ask me, since you mentined your budget is in the range of 55k, I suggest you go in for the HP dv2117TX which will come up to about 60k if you go through the employee purchase program. Finding somebody who works in HP shouldn't be that hard.

Well, both are good. Intel laptop are generally more expensive, but at the same time, they give more performance. battery life is no more a problem, as both of them are equivalent on that issue. however, the only difference between the two will all come to graphic card.

now, AMD turion comes with Nvidia 6150 GO, with 430 MCP. Both of those are extremly high performance bridges and none of the intel chips for mobile comes close to them. If given a option of AMD Turion w/6150 vs Intel Core Duo w/945, then go for Turion by all means, as it can run some games (like half life 2 on full graphics on 1024 res). The compaq V3000 is available for 45,000 with AMD Turion X2 TL-50 with Nvidia 6150. The equilvalent laptop in terms of features is HP DV2000 (both are almost same, color is different), sells for 58,000 for Intel Core Duo 1.73 GHz. Rest of the config is same. I would go for Compaq V3000 mainly because it is 13000 cheap and will offer better graohical performance. However, CPU intensive task such as zipping, Core Duo will be faster.

Just analyse your needs and budget and then analyse. If you give a budget range, I may be able to help you get a specific model.

The HP dv2000 series also comes with a camera built-in to the frame. It also comes with a very handy remote control... anybody who has ever had to do presentations knows the value of that plus it also has QuickPlay which allows you to play DVD's and MP3s without having to boot to the OS.

I think that extra 13k is justified.... but you might not... the way I look at it is it's a one time thing for a good 18 months. I'd rather have everything built into it than go shopping for additional gizmos and having to lug them around... especially a webcam.

@evilution.... you mentioned battery usage for the AMD Turion X2 is no longer a problem.... how so? As far as I know they haven't released any newer Turion processors that are more energy efficient.
