Socket 754 shipments outlast socket 939 but AMD prepares the transition over to socket AM2

AMD has been performing very well in terms of delivering new products to the masses as well as ensuring that shipments are on time. With regards to processors and platforms, AMD is now in a position where it can diversify at its own pace and not have to be in Intel's shadow.

This year, we will be seeing a great deal of things happening with AMD's processors as well as the sockets that hold them. Coming with these changes will be new motherboards as well as opportunities for new platforms. We last reported on AMD's next-generation generation socket F, which is a LGA-type socket with 1207 pins. The new socket will be home to AMD's upcoming dual-core as well as quad-core Opterons.

Despite the need for more complex interfaces to support multi-core processors, AMD's existing socket 754 will be outlasting the more complex socket 939. Currently, socket 939 is home to AMD's Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2 and Athlon 64 FX processors while socket 754 is for Sempron. According to AMD documentation, all socket 939 processors will stop shipping Q2 2007 with final orders occurring nearly half a year before end-date.

For socket 939 processors, the first to fall off the charts will be Athlon 64 processors based on Venice core, with last orders occurring in the Q2 of this year and shipments stopping by the end of Q4. Athlon 64 processors based on San Diego will see similar results starting in Q4. Interestingly, while the Athlon FX 60 recently just launched, AMD will be taking final orders in Q4 of this year. Athlon X2 processors based on socket 939 will stop shipping in Q2 2007 with final orders being taken in Q4 of this year. Processors based on socket 754, such as AMD's Sempron will be continuing to ship well into 2007 and cease near the end of the year.

The move is to transition motherboard manufacturers over to AMD's new socket AM2, which is a unified socket architecture designed to hold both Athlon and Sempron processors as well as upcoming dual-core Turions. Processors based on the new AM2 interface will begin shipping later this year.

LOL I was about to post it right now :P. Anyway this is the mother of all ironies. The demise of Socket 754 was predicted nearly a year and half back and it continues to live on. Shows what a nice budget platform it was.

I don't know why, but I remember when I bought my computer hardware in Taiwan, he gave this Athlon 64 CPU and a Socket 754 mobo to my Dad and said that I should trust him because this platform is not nearly as dead as people believe (this was in 2005 beginning)....I'm beginning to think whether he was a psychic or what?

754 indeed is selling more than their 939 counterparts, many of my friends who bought computer recently have 754 socket based boards and 2800+ was a hot selling cake due to its low price(Most of my friend bought AMD since i was recommending them, but they din't knew it came in 2 flavours). I remember a dealer saying Athlon 64 is double times faster than a 32 bit proccessor:S

@ Darth_Infernus: May be he would have said that to push the Socket 754 to you(No offense:) may be he would have been a knowledgable person ). When i went to a dealer to buy a computer for my friend few months back he was trying to push a socket 478 based intel CPU saying he can upgrade even after 2 or 3 years without changing the Motherboard:P.

The difference between the Taiwanese and the Indian dealers is that the Taiwan guys do not push obsolete hardware. Even if you go with whatever they give you, one can be assured that it performs good and works well, unlike the fairly low-end crap our dealers try to push. :)

Oh, the guy also installed the RAM and CPU onto the motherboard for me without asking any extra money ("Installation charges"). He also tested it on a computer before giving it. Nice quality control, I must say.

The RAM and CPU was also the ones suggested by him, and for the record, he gave me DDR500 "Hard-core" memory from Kingmax (Google up the reviews - Its very good RAM).

Much different than our Indian dealers.

u can get the 3700+, there is no 3500+ for socket 754 :bleh:

Well...the future is dual core and there doesnt seem to be any for Socket 754, unless its those to-be-released Turions that run on desktop motherboards.

Raghu.

so the bottomline is ??? .. can i get anthing more powerfull than 3500+ for my 754 socket?? :D :D

The purchase was, nevertheless, excellent at that time, when there was no such thing as dual core....and you should have seen the prices there (so low that you'll never believe it);)
