It comes as no surprise that Android 2.3 Gingerbread (way back from 2009) still continues to be the dominant Android OS version found in over 50% devices (even after the release of Android 3.0, 3.1, 4.0, 4.1 and now Android 4.2 Jelly Bean). Only recently has the trend picked up for smartphones to come pre-installed with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, finally ditching Android 2.3 Gingerbread and laying it down to the graves. Find out more about the distribution, and the latest scoop on the next Android iteration, Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie.
Android OS Distribution
We note that Android 2.3 Gingerbread share has been rapidly declining, while Android 4.0 share is on the increase, from 25.8% in the last month to 27.5% this month. Jelly Bean's share too doubled from 2.7% to 5.9% in just a month, which is nearly double. Signs of good times ahead, especially when Sony just announced their first budget (read, entry level) smartphone packing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for Q1 2013, the Xperia E and E Dual.
Here's the complete distribution chart for the month:
Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie
Moving on, we already know that Google must be in full swing developing their next Android, i.e. Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie. Waiting to be the same huge revolution that Android 4.0 ICS brought along with, Android 5.0 is hotly anticipated to be unveiled in Google's Developer I/O in May 2013. Summer can't come soon enough! (meanwhile, enjoy winter while it lasts folks).
A recent image leaked by a Google Employee somewhat confirms the Key Lime Pie tag. The droid seems pretty happy with it, that is pretty apparent. Let's see what you make of this. Have a look:
