Just came to know via a forward that android still does not support Hindi! so if you are trying to read this post on android device, please confirm if you are able to read the text below.

Issue 12981 - android - Hindi Font showing as Square Boxes in Input Languages for Gingerbread/Android 2.3 - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting

Issue 1618 - android - Feature request: support Hindi characters in the droid fonts - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting

Issue 3029 - android - support for Indian Regional Languages..... - Android - An Open Handset Alliance Project - Google Project Hosting

If not, then please vote, comment & star the bug report. so google is forced to fix this issue ASAP. Its kinda shame that hindi is not supported:no: & this should be fixed.

[edit]

For folks, who don't understand hindi. here a loose translation done by me(not 100% correct though)

Android 3.2 (the latest version of the Honeycomb tablet OS) has NO

support for Hindi langauge. For Hindi support in android, we have been

waiting for three years, the wait should not the last any longer because

indian users wants to buy a phone and tablet with Hindi on it. But

untill now, hindi speaking cosumer are at disadvatage.

Well this is not Google's fault but its us -- Indians. Google did not

support the Arabic language. However, In 2010 bug report was filled &

that bug report(arabix support) had 5,000 votes due to which google was forced to add arabic in next release. From 2008, the hindi related bug reports only have

few hundred votes. Not having enough votes is the reason of lack of hindi support. Now tell me who is at fault here Google or us(Indians)?

The phone, tablet users leave alone the thousands on Net Hindi reading - writing, even when we can not bother to go there to vote.

Till now, this issue has got maximum 570 votes. If votes reach in thousands, then Google might add Hindi support on priority.

In My Opinion, we should use all means of social media(Groups,Twitter,Facebook, blogs etc) to spread the news & try to get votes. you should appeal to ALL your friends, family to vote on this issue.

@Dark not to flame but I would say there should be support for regional languages be it Hindi, Marathi or any other language for phones being sold in Indian Sub continent.

^^ wouldn't that apply to not having marathi support in your phone? Its funny how the lack of a language in a mobile phone becomes a political issue.

i think if something does not have what i desire, i would not buy it.

ITS A FREE MARKET !!!!

Everything becomes more like a political issue rather than a secular democracy, democracy has become a SLAVE in this country.

guys not all threads are made in GT section.

OP here has a valid point.

India is an emerging market for smartphones and having a language support has nothing to do with politics and culture and etc but with scope of it's adopters..

Arabs don't get arabic support on all android devices.. I often see some arabs creating bounty threads for developers to get arabic support for their devices.

So it really doesn't matter if Google wants to support it, if you are willing to put a bounty on things to be developed then there are always the developer way.

But yes, having a language support for at least a national language can be worth voting for as long as there is a way to vote.

A popular misconception among we Indians is that Hindi is our National Language. In reality & The fact is that, Hindi is not our National Language; we do not have a National Language or a National Religion. Neither our constitution nor our law recognizes the existence of a National Language.

Article 343 of our constitution dictates that "the official language of the Union shall be Hindi in Devanagari script," it also puts forth English as the other official language.

The fact stands that Hindi remains to be the most spoken language in the country. It is this potential of Hindi helped it gain the status of Official Language of the Parliament, along with English. The States are given power to select one of its widely spoken languages or Hindi as the official language, along with English.

For so many decades now, we have managed very well without a National Language. Not having a common language has not stopped us from going anywhere in the country or interacting with anyone.

The point is, in this global world where the whole world is eying us, do we really need to fight between ourselves on matters like having a national language?

^^ He clearly says Hindi is a "notional language". It exists only in theory not in reality. Its a good thing that imaginary languages like Hindi are not supported in Android. Next people will want support for Klingon :P

and the language wars start .....

OP I am pretty sure google does its own research for adding languages to android, maybe they think the market demand for hindi among android users is not so significant for investing any resources.

put any language... but everyone's gonna use english.... dat doesnt matter... but one thing... i dont want hiindi on my buttons :p like the nokia phones do....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
