While I was more impressed by the T-Mobile G1 than I thought I'd be, the list of catches for Android and the phone are quickly piling up—some that might very well be dealbreakers. Topping the list, it's tightly integrated with your Google account—so tightly that you can only use one Google account with the phone. If you want to switch to another account, you have to do a whole factory reset. Update: T-Mobile has patched up some of them—the 1GB cap is gone, and they'll unlock the phone for you after 90 days.
Android and T-Mobile G1's Five Most Obnoxious Flaws

In a nutshell, Google's Android is a damp squib.:P

What is this? A Linux kernel for the developers to plugin with all the apps and features they want!
Common man, not even basic Video playback? So do you have a camera and does it support video recording?

Warning, i have not read a single article yet about the G1. Will catch some tonight.

video playback is not exactly a deal breaker for me, its a phone for the enthus as of now, recall the state of WinCE for starts or even the iphone in its first avatar was laughable at best.

Cummon guys support the good cause, an open architecture is gonna save us from exorbitant phone os as well as software costs. Future is more and more cloud centric as google sees it and they are headed in the right direction. Some flaws are definitely not ignorable, however they can be fogiven that Dream is just "one of the kind" and there are going tobe many android devices soon.

Wooah..Thats one big statement. Please explain.

Its strange how much people can compromise on things that they like. Missing video-recording on iPhone is a huge blunder. But its ok if something as basic as a video player is not available on other platforms :)

i am sure android will gain momentum pretty fast...i can wait to have loads of 2rd party apps on my android phone :)

@Pat: If you consider the H/W cost of a HTC device, it can be sold at lot less, however with WinMo (my fav OS using a winmo since last 3 years). Also dependency on MS does little good to devie manufacturers as MS is known to be too slow in rolling out revisions to the OS. Look at winmo 7 and u'll realize.

Android is an open platform, the app store kinda thing is there, sdk is available for everyone to play around with, it wont be long before ppl start cooking their own custom android mashups with only the apps they need and what not.
Your second point is not entirely invalid, however the iPhone was supposed to be and marketed as en masse device. So the basic things had to be there, android has always been the phone for the geek at least till the platform gains momentum. There should be no FUD about the platform, even if G1 does not meet all expectations.

Agreed that HTC pays some amount as royalty to MS for every device with win-mo! However, that hardly adds to the cost of the device for the end-user. You see phones with specs similar to G1 (HTC Touch Diamond for example) sold for almost the same price as that of an iPhone, if not more.

My point was how do you expect "the phone and its software" to be cheap ? Its an open market, there will be free apps as well as paid apps (just like in appstore)

Whatever, but for now, it looks like the Android is the next casualty in the long lineup of phones that have been/ were being touted as "iPhone killers" (that phrase sounds pretty corny to me though)

@superczar: yeah too corny a term, why need x(gadgetname)killer in the first place, why not make a revolutionary product yourself.
android was never going to be an iphone killer, apple in in a league of its own and targets a completely different demography as against google, which wins techies over with performance, usability and simplicity, which to me matter most.

All of which, the iPhone does better than any other phone on the market right now ;)

Woah..talk abt missing features!!!

But i guess many are device specific..And Android wil improve with each phone that'l come out..

The pic at gizmod pretty much sums it up lol,

+1

I had better expectations from Android, but this phones disappoints me. So long for iPhone killer, there are some inherent flaws in iPhone too, but it still makes a much sweeter deal at $200.

yea like not being able to send mms and forward sms ...cant use bluetooth ( even after the 2nd version is out )..well yea these basic flaws are nothing compared to the flaws of 1st gen android. yea right !!!

oh and btw....androids got a real keyboard... id use that anyday over a virtual keyboard.

and did you read you can use the g1 with any simcard after 90 days. hmmm really the iphone is so much superior to the android. too bad i just cant see how.

like I said elsewhere except sending files over bluetooth everything else could be done ... it's a pity that even after more that a year since it's launch, nothing from the competition could match it

Yep even with these flaws its still better, let me sum up some features of G1 (from gizmod and engadget)

- there is no desktop syncing app

- There's no video playback at all right now, except for YouTube

- No multitouch on the G1 and there never will be, since the panel itself doesn't support it

- The lack of a headphone jack

- You've gotta have an SD card for any kind of music or video playback

- capacitive screen feels a tad more fragile

- HTC's keyboards have been getting increasingly shallow of late, and there's not much feel to this one -- the keys are pretty flat with the surface of the phone

- 256MB of built-in memory (wow)

- The music player is pretty disappointing, with a confusing method of selecting and playing songs, and a general "b team" look to it.

- podcasts and Audible haven't even gotten a mention.

I hope that gives you a glimpse of it!

Lets just consider it as a prototype Android device for the real world testing for the developers and leave it to it.

Everybody knows it is not going to work wonders, so lets wait for a better Android phone.

I totally agree to that, and people start saying its already better than the iphone that was only for them, I seriously do think though, its gonna get better to a point where apple will have a direct and serious competition with android! I was expecting better, but at least its a start!

Lets just hope for its own sake that Andriod overcomes its current shortcomings. Unlike iPhone which can survive with hype alone, Android cannot survive the market with such critical missing features.

I was keen on how this platform would turn out, but it seems that I can skip the first iteration of Andriod phones.
