Android apps suggestions .

Dark Star

ex-Mod
I'll be getting my first droid phone Sony Xperia Sola (bk), its a dual core soc phone so much powerful. even though i've used android before I am not much acquainted with the apps and productiveness of the platform.

I'll mostly be using my phone for multimedia and productive use, gaming is not a priority but won't mind certain tp games.

Some of the apps that I'll install straight away are -

1. Sports Tracker
2. Path
3. Instagram / foursquare and some other lame social apps.
4. Dropbox (if the phone doesn't come with it preinstalled)
5. Pocket for read it later or instapaper ?

I guess that's it, don't have much of an idea on productive apps so suggestion will be helpful.

What I need is -

1. An app for taking note. I am not going for evernote because it doesn't have strikeout method for checking completed notes.
2. Pdf viewer ?
3. Document viewer ?
4. Do I need a better music player than the stock ones.
5. A good video player with support for either ffmpeg or xvid code support and ability to play mkv/mp4.

Other than that I have no idea what to install. The phone does come with macfee av so I think I'll be uninstalling it? Av really needed ?

What about battery saving apps ? Heard they eat away more battery than they save it :p What else do I need to put it inside along with some gimmiky theme and all.

Please do the needful.

Regards

MIUI is not available for my phone as of now, its a new device has been rooted but no MIUI port yet.

What about other recommended apps ?

Listing the ones based on my user experience...
1. Using MIUI rom and the inbuilt Notes app does the job (can strike the completed tasks)
2. Office suite - free version only for viewing the files https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5tb2Jpc3lzdGVtcy5vZmZpY2UiXQ..
3. Same as above (love to type such answers :))
4. As dexBG says Sony's stock should be good else try PowerAmp, Winamp
5. MX Video Player - the best

Go for Diceplayer, can play FLVs in HW accelerated mode which MX player can't, also faster and more sleek.

2. ezpdf reader if you are inclined to spend 2$; else look at 3
3. kingsoft office - freeware which can edit office docs and read pdfs
5. mx video player

Colornote

2. Pdf viewer
3. Document viewer

Kingsoft office suite

4. Do I need a better music player than the stock ones.

Try Winamp, 3 (cube), MixZing, RealPlayer.... Too many options.

5. A good video player with support for either ffmpeg or xvid code support and ability to play mkv/mp4.

Mobo Video Player pro. But you can convert files and transfer them to memory card.

And try TubeMate. It allows to download videos from YouTube. But that app isn't available in Android app store for obvious reasons.

1. Colornote
2. Adobe Reader suffice my needs.
3. Thinkfree office
4. PowerAmp is much better than stock one :)
5. MX Video Player

Android Assistant - pack of utilities like app2sd, batch uninstall etc.

Battery Dr Saver - Use it while charging and it rings after 100% charged. Also allows you to quickly change settings like different volumes such as ring, media, along with screen brightness and other things which causes to drain battery.

And IMHO, these 3 are must have apps :
ES explorer
Go Launcher
Barcode Scanner

You could try Any.Do as organiser.
Mx player for video.
Whatsapp for texting.
Skype for calls.
Instagram for retro photos.
Tune In Radio for Internet radio.
Titanium Backup, Apps2sd for app backup
Backup Everything for contacts, sms, apns etc
Tapatalk for viewing forums/boards.

Go Launcher and Go SMS Pro are must have apps. :D If you want something lightweight then Zeam Launcher is very light weight and highly customizable launcher :)

Ohh, and forgot. Any.Do is best organizer and note taking app :)

1. I use Tasks for it
2. ezPDF reader
4. No. n7music player
5. MX Player w/o any doubt.

Thanks a lot guys , will create a new list with all those good apps.

Have few question about whatsapp - This work only if both users (sender and receiver ) have the app installed or just work like normal sms ?

Other than that is there an additional way to send sms free using some app ? Ohh and will Skype allow me to do free voice calls (never used it :ashamed: )?

Whatsapp works only if both has it installed
Skype can voice call but need to purchase credit if you want to call on Normal Phones, on PC or Mobile with Skype can call Free (VOIP)

Other users need to have whatsapp installed, but once you install whatsapp the app will read your phonebook and list the users who have whatsapp.
basically avoids the pain of creating username and then adding friends in your list.

For skype, skype to skype calls are free. For calling mobile/landline you would have to buy credit.
