It's bad enough that gprs plans suck so much here (at least on Vodafone) that one can't even think about using gps while loading maps on the fly, but on top of that Google turn-by-turn navigation is not even available in India.

So are there any options for offline (i.e. preloaded) maps on Android phones?

I tired Brut maps but that only saves caches of maps that you manually view on your phone. And I need navigation in situations where I need to go somewhere I have no idea of where it is. So either I view all maps of entire Delhi (forget India) at all zoom levels, or I accept that this is not a practical solution.

So does anyone here know of a practical solution?

^ Hmmm, that's about Rs. 2,500 - a little steep IMHO, but if there is no other option I may have to. Are there any free/cheaper options?

Sygic MMI( Map My India) is good i have used it when i was in India .I am still using the same with NZ maps. There is Ndrive as well but the application interface $ucks big time but maps are perfect as good as Map My India.

I did not purchase the app :P

The upcoming HTC Dezire HD will have offline maps, the first time ever by HTC. So there'd may be hope for other handsets too to get it via future updates.

^^+1 Brut maps without caching works awesome for me while driving both in map mode as well as navigation mode

I just couldn't figure out how to get the navigation mode working. Plus manually caching map tiles at all zoom levels is a pain in the ***.

Dump Vodafone like i did and opt for 2Gb - 98 Rs plan from Airtel :)

I am waiting for mobile number portability for just that!! Vodafone Live not working with apps = fail. Vodafone mobile connect = bigger fail (terrible plans).

^^ For navigation, just search for an address and then go to directions, then press navigate. Otherwise directly go to "Navigation" app and start it that way..

Manual caching is a pain for sure that's why i don't do it..It works fine on even very slow gprs/edge speeds and data usage is also not very high.. I do a lot of navigation, surfing, downloads, mail syncing etc on my phone and i barely cross 200-300 mb a month..navigation must be max 5-10 mb a month i guess
