What appears to be an Android juggernaut continues, with two reports saying that Android phone shipments top the U.S. smartphone market and one adding that it trails only Nokia worldwide. The only way competitors seem likely to catch up is via lawsuits.

One report, from Canalys, says that Android phones had a 44% share of phones purchases for the U.S market in the third quarter, with iPhones coming in second at 26%. In raw numbers, that means 9.1 million Android phones and 5.5 million iPhones.

Worldwide, the report said, Nokia shipped 33% of all smartphones in the quarter, followed by Android with about 25%, with the iPhone at 17%, and RIM at 15%. The report found that sales of Android phones jumped an astonishing 1,309% compared to last year.

The reports noted that:

Once again this quarter, it was devices running the Android platform that proved the greatest driver of growth in the worldwide market, up 1,309% year-on-year from 1.4 million in Q3 2009 to more than 20.0 million units in Q3 2010, forming a quarter of the market share.

The NPD Group also released a report today about smartphone shipments in the third quarter in the U.S. and they found the same thing that Canalys did. The report put Android at the top of the market for new smartphone shipments with 44%, followed by iPhone with 23%, and RIM with 22%.

Ross Rubin, the executive director of industry analysis for the NPD Group, said one reason for Android's success is, "Multiple manufacturers [with Android phones] provide more consumer choice in the marketplace." The Canalys report made almost the identical point, noting, "Android devices are available and affordable to consumers on almost any budget."

If competitors have their way, though, Android won't be available on many phones at many price points. They're ganging their lawyers up on the operating system and phone manufacturers who use it. Apple, for example, recently filed two lawsuits against Motorola, including against Android-based Motorola phones, Microsoft has sued Motorola as well as other Android phone makers, and even Oracle has gotten into the act, suing Google over the use of Java in Android.

Eventually, those suits will be settled, and don't be surprised if it takes years. Lawyers will be an afterthought. It looks like Android will become even more dominant, likely overtaking Nokia worldwide.

That is hardly surprising given that Android phones include a number of models from at least a dozen mobile companies. I am not complaining though ;)

Andriod is no doubt a better OS compared to IOS and others but hardware wise there is nothing which comes close to iPhone 4.

^ Couldn't have said it better and by hardware I assume you dont exactly are talking about raw power and all those Ghz , RAM etc . I am talking about the overall feel and hardware used to make the phone look like its worth the price you pay for it :D

if apple releases a cheaper version of iphone then its sales will surely increase

also those fools officially release iphone late in India which surely affects their sales

if they launch it for around 30k in India then if would remain unbeatable in that price and SGS sales would drop to a great extent

Actually, I am an Android supporter..... :P

But still, the fact remains that Android phones are currently catering to a wide variety of market segments.

In India itself, we have Android phones from 10k right upto 28k or so. Whereas Apple caters only to the premium market 35k +

So, it is easier (cheaper!) to own an android than the iPhone. So, practically speaking, these numbers don't mean a lot.

:)

This is such a lame article.. How can you compare the iPhone that has just two variants (Both priced similarly to Android's high-end segment) to more than 30 phones which start at half the price of an iPhone.

How about a HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy vs iPhone chart?

That's what I meant Faheem.

@ technoguy: I recently saw few videos on YouTube of iPhone running android. I seriously am more interested in that then cheaper iPhones.

Though I would also like to point out few things going in favor of iOS. My less then 3 year old can virtually do anything on my iPad. He can listen to songs, play his choice of videos, play games and even watch his cartoons on YouTube(with bit of his mom's help). Now I am not sure about android being that simple.

If apple decides to price its phones high or not build a cheaper iphone, why should we hold it against android? In the old mac vs pc debates, nobody claimed that mac marketshare should be compared only to the other high priced pc's

so many android phones & one & only one Iphone, but not for long.

it is quality against quantity, android sure has to do lot of improvement.

@ greenhorn: Chill mate..... :)

Actually, it is like comparing the RR Ghost to all the Maruti Suzuki cars & then saying that Maruti Suzuki cars sell in higher numbers (so that is something cool)!!!

No one is stopping Maruti Suzuki from making a RR Ghost competitor...... But the question remains as to whether one would buy that Maruti Suzuki car or the RR Ghost for ~ Rs.2.5 CR. :D

Like I said before, I myself like Android..... but this comparison is purely lame..... that is the truth. :P

Nice comparision.

But looking from RR Ghost point of view it is a tailor made vehicle suiting the purchaser's wants & needs.

I am still with Apple, their stuff are still the best.

I like HTC, but not with Android.

Actually, there is a purpose

Its not about individual phones, rather the platform. It doesnt matter that the iPhone is costly and Android devices are available in a wide range of prices, but that is plus for the platform. It means a wider adoption.

Analysts and technologists need these kind of figures to make predictions.

A platform is only as strong as mass of users, and Android is gaining numbers on its side.
