I read the following article in a blog post. Thought I should share this here.

[h=1]Stop AirPush Star/plus sign ads in Android notification bar[/h]

Getting those ‘Star’ and ‘Plus’ sign ads on your Android notification bar? You aren’t alone. This the latest method employed by some app publishers to earn more from their apps. Advertising networks such as ‘Air Push’ offer these kind of ad services where an ad will be pushed to a users’ notification bar. You can tap on the notification, like any other notification, and it will take you to the web page being advertised.
If it’s as simple as that, it might not be a problem. But lately, some subscription type ads started appearing. Once you click on these, you’re sure to lose some money from your prepaid balance every day/week/month, even without your knowledge.
While there is no way to stop these ads from appearing, you can check which apps are using this type of ad delivery and then consider uninstalling the app.
From the Android market, install the app ‘AirPush Detector’, by Dan Bjorge, which will identify all the apps that use this service.

Has anybody tried this Airpush detector app?

"Addons detector" has a similar function. I use that. Those irritating plus signs usually come from MP3 Music Download, which is quite a popular app.

I have not tried the above mentioned app, but Lookout's Ad Network Detector seems to scan for multiple ad providers. I once got a desktop icon for some ad after I installed some app, was able to locate it using Lookout.

Yup, I have and it works. It tell you which app is giving those adds and then you can deal with it.
Most devs have removed airpush adds now that the detector is out and people tend to downrank their apps for including airpush with the app.
But if you are getting those adverts, install airpush detector, and uninstall the app and most importantly downrank it in the market. Till now, I have come across only 1 such app.
