no use if u wanna cram it up with movies , get a slower 750 gb hd for that. this is striclty meant for os opartition , games , application install partition.

but are bloody expensive as of now.
news is bout 17000/- for 300gb.
 
Pure overpriced rubbish IMHO.

I'd never ever pay for such a drive! The real world performance gains are simply NOT worth the price you pay. And this comes from an ex-74GB Raptor user.

But as I said before, just my personal opinion :)
 
Wonderful! Now after the introduction of SSDs, these are obsolete in the western market, so they finally want to clear off the stock in India. Even then, those prices are preposterous.

send a pm to the TE dealers, they should have it. check lynx, smc and prime websites otherwise. I have two of these and they are definitely worth it , much better than the prev gen raptors

Friends,

just got a mail from lynx that 2010 models are in stock now, the 600gb cost around 16k. But i already bought two cav. Black drives and running out of sata 3 ports. So will running this velociraptor in sata 2 is a good option? Or should i go for mushkin SSD 120gb instead of this velociraptor? Are SSDs are reliable for frequent read write applications like film editing?

No. You are better off with Raptors for such apps wherein frequent write comes into play more often.
 
But my MB has only 2 sata 3 ports. Will i get any benefit from this raptor in sata 2 than my 64MB cav black which is at sata 3 RAID-0? Anyone mind to guide me about the failure rate, reliability and lifetime of a SSD Drive like mushkin or corsair?
 
Velociraptor should be around 6-7k for 150gb seems a better deal than a ssd imo, real world performance is quite close. Reliability should be same for both I guess . Keep the raptors cool and they should do fine.. I use them as my torrent drives and so far no issues yet :lol:

no clue about sata2/3 ports but I think since it was designed for sata2 it shouldnt have problems on that

I guess you say that based on the X-25E you have?
Real world performance can mean many things.

If you are talking about just using a PC for every day stuff.. then you are right.. it wont make much of a difference. I would go as far as to say that even a velociraptor is not needed for that. SSDs kill velociraptors big time on file access times if not transfer times(which also they do).

Also, SF1200 based drives these days are faster than your E :p

No, The 2010 Models are made for SATA 3 and I dont think they will perform good with SATA 2.

If SSDs are more reliable like Physical Drives, then I will go for a good SSD Drive for boot as I am happy with my current RAID SATA 3 setup with 64MB Cav. Blacks.

Any suggestion for SSD better than Muskin?

Eh? I thought every other article mentioned SSDs are not optimised for frequent write applications such as rendering, Photoshop and so forth? :S

And what's with those MTBF figures being quoted? Where have I remotely mention anything about reliability in my post? :|

everyday stuff can mean a lot of things either , my self i have a ton of tiny fragmented files that i access regularly and bings any hdd to its knees so random access times are more important for me and I don't mind spending and investing on better hdd tech, the thing is raptors in synthetic benchmarks give 100mbps or so whereass ssd gives 270mbps read so while i wasn't expecting 3 times the performance , i was expecting double but what I got was probably 1.5 times faster.

Frequent writes is probably the wrong word here. SSDs are definitely going to be better than mechanical drives for that. The only thing that was holding them back imho was the write speeds, which were good but not spectacular.

The sandforce controllers fix that to a large extent.

Take a look at the numbers here for example Macintosh Performance Guide: Optimizing Photoshop CS4 The OWC comes with a SF controller. They have much better IOPS

Also, I mentioned the MTBF because the OP was asking about reliability in a frequent writes environment, and you said no, mechanical drives are better.
