Antec Inc. has launched the Phantom 500, a 500-watt silent power supply.

Building upon the original Phantom fanless PSU, Phantom 500 uses hybrid fan technology that allows PC users to balance high-power performance with quiet computing. The 500 Watt power supply operates completely silently and fanlessly until its internal temperature reaches a pre-determined user-selected value, when the fan kicks in.

The Phantom 500 is currently available for an estimated street price of $199 through major retailers, e-tailers and distributors, the company said.

The Phantom 500 is 85 percent efficient from a power conversion standpoint and is ATX12V v2.01 compliant. Internally, the device contains its own heatsinks, as well as a chassis heatsink to dissipate heat further. The power supply is equipped with four serial ATA power connectors and a PCI Express graphics card connector for high-end graphics cards, as well as a 24-and-20-pin adapter connector with a detachable 4 pin section for 20 pin backwards compatibility with older motherboards.

The power supply does contain a fan, which will turn on at a user-specified level, so that the system does not overheat.
