Hey guys, if I indeed do go for the 4850 which is highly likely, cause I dont think I would make use of a more powerful GPU, so here is my question..

I currently have the Antec Smart power 450W, would this suffice for the 4850?

If no, how bout the 9800GTX+??

It should suffice but for one card only. BTW, 9800GTX+ draws more power than 4850 ;)

the 9800gtx requires 2x 6pin power conectors while the HD4850 requires only one. ensure that ur SMPS has 2 x6pin for the 9800gtx.

Well the 9800GTX+ states a 425W PSU as its requirement, and 450W is like walking on the edge!

What are you 12v ratings? AFAIK its a Dual Rail PSU right?

but isn't the 9800GTX+ a 55nm card ... so it should be drawing lesser power

Unfortunately, it's not. Power draw depends on many things rather than just manufacturing process. For one, it's clocked higher: core, memory... everything. Secondly, 9800GTX+ is not really a specimen of next-gen tech. It's a product released haphazardly and with not much architectural improvement. No wonder it consumes more power

The SP450w has dual +12v rails of 17A and 15A;

Enough juice to run a 8800GT but I wont suggest a 9800GTX/GTX+ for that; :no:

Get urself a better PSU like the HX620 or the Tagans BZ600/700w;

There is no risk in trying. Your PSU should be just about enough for single 4850. Change it only if you experience stability issues after you get the card. No point in just assuming that it wont work and investing in new PSU when you might just get away with the current one.

And guys his system is not that much oced or carrying too many drives ( i am assuming you are using same system as in your sig ).

i have a similar doubt, i am currently running a 7900gt on Cooler Master 450W power supply with 18A on 12v as peak, so i was wondering do i need to get a new psu for either 4850 or 9800gtx+ ?

Oh, that'd be a wiser choice moving to a new PSU;

Lol, dont risk ur new GPU with that CM 450w unit; :hap5:

yea just add another 150gig raptor in there,,,, and yea Ill try out the 4850 with the current PSU.

Even if its not enough it wont ruin the GPU ?? will it??...like Gannu said no point risking ur GPU with a Cm450?

^ Yup it wouldn't cause any permanent damage, the system will just freeze or reboot when running 3D Mark or an intensive game.

You know you have to get yourself a new PSU then! ;)

haan thats fair enough, Switch posted in another thread that the 4870 consumes lesser power than the 4850, man if this is true, then I'd rather go for that...but doubt if it indeed is true!

At least I wouldn't risk it; :P

I've heard GPU's dying cos they were not supplied enough juice; U can very well get it RMA'd; thats another thing; ;)

Nothing dies from not getting enough juice. Things do die if you feed dirty power. ( Cheap PSUs with lots of noise / ripple voltage ). That can cause some components of the cards to heat up. Many people with X19k series must have gone through this. Their PWM temp used to go through roof if operated with cheapo PSUs with dirty power output.

This is not the case here so there is no real risk.
