Hi All,

I have the following old electrical/electronic equipments. I need your help in getting it in better working condition

1) 20 years old Murphy Radio... it works with MW and SW, can i get this upgraded to play FM ... if so how....
2) 25 years old Garrard LP Turntable...in working condition... but the needle is not there, I have lot of LP records and am searching for the needle for this player, but unable to ffind one, went to SP road (blore) and found that there is only philips needle available which is around 250/-... the shop guy is not sure whether it will fit my player.... waht do u suggest... anybody has a turntable at home... any help in this regard will be great....
3) 15 years old Onida VCR...not working... problem with head... even after getting it repaired from local shops... it is not working.. any good person to depend and rely on....

Problem is since these are very old systems, many of the technicians... of repair shops... dont know how to handle them... and hence afraid to give to them as they might cause more damage....

Please let me know where i can i get this repaired in blore, and what other mods can i do on these systems.

Regards
Sampath

It'll be very difficult to get the pin for the Garrard.

You might try upgrading the whole cartridge. I did that to my Garrard (which I since junked, so sorry) in about 5 minutes. You'll have to rebalance the tonearm so the new cartridge doesn't put a hole through you records, which is usually done through a small wheel behind the arm.

You basically get ceramic and magnetic cartridges, best is to take the cartridge out and check the mounting pattern matches, as well as the general overall dimensions.

Really old Garrard players had a slim profile cartridge, and is difficult to match to the tall profile cartridges available now. Without pics or the actual sample, I won't be able to be of more help. Some of the Garrards are collector's items, the others are total trash.

Upgrading the radio to FM: Forget it. It's not worth the effort, and you'll have to tune it separately - you can fit an FM radio module, but it's a lot of trouble to get the damn thing to work.

I would advise you to throw that VCR away. The parts are probably not available, and IDK how many technicians know about VCRs any more. If you still have fun stuff on tapes, get them converted to CDs. It's cheap, and the best way out.

Thanx a lot sangram for the details....
I will get the exact model number and photo of my garrard player and post it... after that kindly let me know which catridge to use and then i will search on the net.

regd Radio and VCR, i know its very difficult to upgrade and not worth the effort, but i dont want to throw them, want to restore them to their original glory... and keep it running.

Do u know any old techie who might help repair my stuff....

You're not gonna get this stuff on the net - and nor can I. Sole ghisna padega. There's a company in Chennai which makes those cartridges, you have to match it visually.

I have no idea about Bangalore, sorry, Maybe someone in SP Road can put you in touch - no idea. If you're willing to travel I know people who can give it a shot (no guarantees) in Cal.

Wish u were in mumbai , i have a excellent repair guy here who deals in old electronic musical stuff and restores them to stock as well.....if u would want me to ask anything specific to him pls let me know.....im a n00b at this stuff so make sure ur question is understandable to him cause if he asks me anything im gonna have to send a confused smiley back at him ....

u have pm..........

I meant the cartridges you will find in India will not be available to browse on the 'net.

Look I'm really sorry, I can't find the name of that company on the hard disk in my head, I stopped messing with turntables like 12 years ago and have no recollection of the name of that company, except it began with E, and packed stylii and cartridges in yellow packaging, and was based in Chennai. A google search also throws up a blank so I'm sorry I can't help sitting here.

I really wish you could leg it across the country, but that's not very practical. I'll try to look up a few options on my next visit to Lamington Rd, so sit tight, OK?

How about if i get these from US, from my friend.. Hope it should be available there... will post u the image of my LP turntable... let me know ur personal email id...

Regarding Onida VCR, wont the MICR guys do the servicing... of these if taken to centre....

best way to take care of antique-tronics is to do it yourself. I have a panasonic cassette player which dad loved to pieces. unfortunately, very few people knew how to fix it. so guess what , i decided to study electronics , and more importantly, did a bit of research into hands on electronics stuff :hap2:

I did lose 4 years of my life studying B tech electronics which gave me nothing but headaches, and whatever practical electronics i know , i learnt on my own :P

But on the other hand , i figured out how to fix my dad's tape deck, and now its up and running, with a different tape head preamp ( nothing wrong with the old one , new one sounds better thats all), new drive motor, new belts , new flywheel, new volume control, LED's instead of bulbs, but yes, its working perfectly, and now i can find my way around most audio equipment :D

Gud to hear u learnt the stuff the hard way... will u be able to help me with this... wanna try fixing my vcr? i am a mech guy... hence dont hav much idea abt the internals of these tronics... but very much interested... if somebody helps me... on this...
