antivirus recommendations? (other than Nod32, AVG or Norton)

i know many people swear by Nod32 but i've had bad experiences with it. it was pretty fast initially but it also had some kinda conflict with my computer (2800+ 64, 512mb RAM) that everytime i rendered some video, the next render would run at less than 5% speed. the only way to fix was to reboot. i even tried a windows format/re-install and it didnt fix it. as soon as i removed Nod32, the problem was gone. AVG just felt clunky overall and Norton.. lets not even go there :P i'm downloading Kaspersky atm since a few people on this site seem to like it but there was stuff on other sites about it being a resource hog.

so, any recommendations on a good antivirus that's really fast and low on system resources? i'm a pretty careful user so my focus is more on speed than detection rate. thanks. another thing, is turning off the realtime protection a good idea i.e running the antivirus only when necessary?

yea a lot of people there recommending Nod32. like i said, i tried it and it was pretty fast but caused a stupid conflict with my video rendering so it's out of the question for me

Then try kaspersky, f-secure or avg :)

p.s. - i know nod32 is out of question for you, but your ques was which is best a/v, recommend it ? my answer, nod32 followed by all else ;)

if it happened with Nod ... it may happen the same with the else :S

apart from nod and kav, sophos and f-prot may do, though not even a bit friendly interface (but both has good reviews and detection rate)

stay away from panda :D

I prefer Kaspersky, even PC-Cillin 2005 was nice( that was the one i used to use before :P)

Kaspersky is just a "bit heavy" on system resources but offers better security and quick updates!

I hate NORTON its corrupts the registry memory processes etc .. and yea i dont l.ike any antiviruses until i dont know how to remove them from the registry manually and one more thing avg i think is better and avast too others r just **** lol i hate em .. get anti spywares instead :d

Thats what i used to do earlier (on my older rig with 256MB RAM). Turn on AV only when i was online or copying data from a CD/FDD.

Kaspersky is heavy on sys resources... u can clearly note the sys slowing down after its installation...

I would recommend e-Trust antivirus by Computer associates... very lite on the system and is great... try it... u wll not regret...

I'm using Avast free.
I think its better than AVG free edition.

But Antivirus alone don't do the job when it comes to spyware so i got Adaware, Spyybot, Spyware Blaster and Spyware Doctor (yeah i was hit with one bad ass trojan last week) in my system right now!

@boka, you're right! the same thing happened even after installing Kaspersky. Now the only way out for me is to stop it from loading on startup and use only as needed. Realtime protection screws up my video rendering for some reason.

may be thts why my frnds who do the rendering things ... use dual boot .. one for general use .. another stipped version just for video things :) block or disable any connectivity on tht one (unless u need that ... in tht case, use firewall only)
