Would there be any problem in using the mobile phone as a hotspot for browsing internet on laptop for long time.
I mean by using like there will be any damage to the phone or any other aspect.
Mobile is HTC Explorer
Usage will be around 3-4gb per month like this

Battery will drain faster and become hot. Expect to replace the battery soon. Other than that, I don't see any real damage to the phone.

Would it be any better if the phone is continuously connected to a wall charger / laptop USB port with the battery taken out (if it is possible). That should ensure that battery is not hammered.

I used to do it during the nokia 7710 era with O2 mobile.Battery to dur ki baat hain.Internal circuit because of heat got burned.I was asked to pay 3500 or the shop will purchase the piece for same price from me.DUring those day none of the mobile shop was ready to repair this Uk piece .I washed my hand.Though i guess now the circuits are much more powerful to handle such situation those were old days.
But yes make sure you get the batteries easily for this mobile. That will be the first thing to loose power plus make sure phone doesn't go hot too much or give it some break in use continuously.

Do all this only if phone is cheap enough. Don't use your S3 and such phones as hotspot for prolonged period of time. I too have experienced phone getting Hot. My iPhone too gets pretty hot if i use hotspot for good amount of time.

I have been using my Galaxy Nexus as a Wi-fi hotspot for nearly six months now. It already has pathetic battery life but I haven't seen any further deterioration.
The chargers these days cut off supply after the battery gets fully charged and then resume charging once it drops back to 95-96%

I have experimented with over 10 gb approx data dnlded till now via wifi hotspot on my Karbonn A5. Battery life is still ok after nearly 12 montha. But whatever you do, dont leave the phone plugged in at 100% charge while using as hotspot. I did this once and my phone was dead the next morning. Removed the battery for some time and reinserted and it was fine. Thankfully there was no permanent damage

I do that and haven't had any issues.
