I am looking at contributing a very modest sum of about 1.5k every month from my salary towards charity. I came across this site www.worldvision.in which allows us to select a child for sponsorship. Basically, I will have to contribute a fixed amount of about 1k every month to them towards sponsorship of that child. Does anyone have any experience with this organization?

Hey Logistopath, I've worked for an Organization called Make A Difference (MAD). I dont know about the one you mentioned but i've handled city operations for these guys for two years.

Check out their website-> www.Makeadiff.in and their blog www.makeadiff.in/blog(Updated very regularly). MAD is now in 19 cities.

They have a donation format called FOM(Friends of MAD) where you sign an FOM form(Ecs form) And the amount you agree to gets deducted every month.

You can try it. If you're young, they might even involve you in monthly outdoor activities that they do with the kids. Or if you have the zeal you can spare 3-4 hrs a week on a saturday OR a sunday and teach the kids yourself. They provide training and workshops. You need to pass their recruitment though, which has very high standards.

They teach Cambridge English to Children in shelter homes to children at risk.

What city are you in?

#Party Monger I'm sure it must have been a nice experience for you to work with those children. I am from Erode, and unfortunately MAD doesn't operate here. Would have definitely loved to work with the kids. Nice to see some people really making a difference in those young lives.

Ah darn, okay! thanks for the kind words, im sure you'l find the right way to make a difference for those children

In fact, I went ahead and started sponsoring a 2 year old female child through World Vision India. The child is based in Kangeyam, which is less than a 80 kms from Erode. After establishing sufficient rapport with the child, we intend to pay a visit at least once a year and make sure she is in good hands. I was told that the sponsorship would be a long term commitment, that is, until the child attains at least 18 years of age. My wife and myself were absolutely fine with that.

Amazing! You should spend time with her, you'l be surprised how much fun it is.

Not to mention an incredible experience!

WV, is a renowned organization. From experience I can say: One of my Uncles worked with this for a while, and they are quite good in humanitarian and social Welfare.

Thanks for the info. Now I can be pretty sure that my contributions will not fall in bad hands.

Guys, any idea about Helpage India, I have donated some amount to them which will be used for basic financial & medical needs of an elderly people for a year.

i don't have experience with World Vision INDIA, but i have made corrugated cartons for them through third person who supplies relief material to them (http://www.reliefsupplier.com). This is not any contribution or help i got paid for it.

I also want to contribute a little but i dont have time now lets see in near future i will sure do some help by giving time in their activities.

Sorry to be cynical but I don't recommend donating to these MNC/Corp type NGOs. I mean they already get several hundred crores from foreign inflows.

Please find out through your contacts, friends or relatives about ppl who do good social service or small NGOs and donate to them. They don't have crores for advertising budget nor hide big amounts under 'operation or adm expenses' while using it for undisclosed purposes.

Btw also google and find out about darker side of these big NGOs. Also stay away from politicians/ex-bureaucrats promoted charities.
