No.. I am not looking for navigation apps. This time, I am looking for an app that can track a person (family member or friend or employee) using the GPS in his/her mobile. It should be able to locate the person in real time, or at least something which refreshes the location data every 5 mins or 10 mins. I want something that can work offline, without the need for wifi connection or mobile data.

I had tried GPS Tracking Pro app, but this one requires data connection. Without internet of any sort, it does nothing. Is there any app that fulfills my requirement? Are there any other alternative means to locate someone based on GPS. This type of app will be a boon to many - for reasons like safety, convenience, etc.

P.S: I do not intend to use this for malicious reasons. :p

I don't think something like that would exist for a mobile phone. Simple logic being that the phone has to transmit that data/location somehow and for that data will have to be used.

^^ How do standalone GPS trackers work, in that case? Are they an entirely different technology? I can understand your logic. That was something I didn't consider at all.

What I meant was that I don't think phones are equipped with the same chips and capability as a standalone GPS tracker. I could be wrong but I don't think the A-GPS chips in our mobile phones have that capability.

Edit-

Read the 'Description' on this page for more details -

P.S.- Thanks for asking this query. I got to learn something new today.

Yeah.. Seems to be the most likely explanation. So the only option is to have some sort of network connectivity and then use the app I mentioned above.

Yes, without mobile data, tracking location is useless. Tracking apps will have the provision to store the data, but to transmit to another device or sync with a server, it will definitely need mobile data connection. This seems logical, but not sure if USSD codes can be utilized in such situations.

Then how does the phone tracking feature works for almost all big carriers work for iphone?

@rdst_1 That wiki page clarified some doubts. Basically, without data connection, the chip in the mobile is not of much use.

@ayanavish Followmee seems to be a good alternative, as long as you are not in need of real time updates. If that is the case, then using running/cycling apps can also be considered I suppose. Whenever the mobile is able to access the net, it will upload the GPS details, right?

@m-jeri I have zero knowledge about iphones, so please clarify.. When the iphone is lost, can it be located even when the net is not accessed? Maybe IMEI number plays a role?

A-GPS also uses mobile networls to triangulate your position. No internet is needed for that but only carriers will be able to see your location, not a phone app. Unless the carriers start sharing that info I don't see a way out.

isn't there any system in which we send an SMS to the phone and the phone sends an SMS with coordinates? maybe entirely inside an application? that would be real helpful :)

There are small phones available in ebay for tracking children's ( rather any body) movement. It looks like a toy/ doll. You send the sms to that phone and in return you will get the GPS coordinates in the form of an sms. There are some buttons to call only pre-programmed numbers. Try your search with child tracking. I remember it was costing around 5000 INR
