Hi,

I have this project in mind, with an old p4 lying around the house with 6- Sata Ports, I was thinking of adding a couple of 500GB HDD's to this and create a NAS Server.

Need advice / tips if you already built or have one.

Also another question an important one: Is it worth it? I mean all i want to do is have a place were my data is backed-up(System Backup), Movies, Games Setups etc.

So the ultimate question is do i just buy a 1TB external HDD or buy 2 500GB Stick them in the P4 and configure FreeNAS

a P4 (around 100W idle ) system will consume a lot of electricity. Since its NAS it'll be running 24x7. So it'll be 2.4 KWhr (units) everyday.

2.4 x 8 (Cost per watt) = Rs. 19.2 everyday. This amounts to Rs 7000 a year. So i suggest you to sell this off and buy a atom based rig or a NAS that'll save you money.

hmmm..... so what about a AMD Sempron with cool'n'quiet?

hmmm..... so what about a AMD Sempron with cool'n'quiet? as i already have a spare biostar motherboard.

Well it's definitely worth the effort if you have system to spare. But I'm not sure if that P4 will be any power efficient for 24/7 usage. Also if you are planning to use it as backup system primarily I advice using two 1TB drives in mirror mode for added backup measures.

Ok I have this setup

AMD Athlon X64 5200+ With Cool N Quiet

BIOStar A785GE

Corsair XMS2 2GB DDR2 800MHz

1TB Seagate HDD

2 GB SanDisk (NO DVD Drive)

The problem is that FreeNAS doesn't support Downloading from File Sharing accounts like Rapidshare etc. which i really need. So any suggestions?

i would suggest you go fro dedicated NAS equipment like QNAP or SYNOLOGY. there is another product i am due to get and try... will let you know the details when i have it... it is an under 5v 24*7 solution

those things are too costly. and besides I already have a system to spare, so i will utilize that instead of purchase something.

no need to run NAS devices

just use windows ( helps with downloading) and then install NAS software and share your drives

i do this on a eeepc4g, with 2tb attached with NFS filesharing - stream movies over 54g to xtreamer max 720p w/o stutter

regarding shares

if accessing from a windows machine download the unix services for windows package from microsoft, install, map your NFS shares as mounted drives

ready to rock n roll

^ How much do you pay for your internet? :)

I might altogether drop the idea of this NAS Box as i am low on space ( no place to keep the system) and can't find a good small cabby.

...Oh well! why not simply use Win 7 media Server ??

I am using it without an issue, it streams movies, music Pictures, over my WiFi,

My PS3 can detect it wirelessly and so does my new Plasma with a USB Lan Card.

I am able to stream movies directly to the PS3 or the TV whichever is required even to my roommates PC or laptop

if needed.

All it takes it two steps in Windows and you are ready to go, even as the facility to password protect it.

Why do you want a dedicated NAS?
