Okay i wanna buy a speaker system for my rig. i don't know which one to go for ----- Mx-5021, klipsch promedia 2.1 or ATP3 ----(i know ATP 3 is in a different league)

Many have said that altec's Mx-5021 are the quite good but i have alos heard negative things about it. many say , it's base is a bit too weak and treble is rather high. Some say, you get bored after listening to it for long.

Also it has that annoying hissing sound when it's on but not playing anything. Is this true ?? if so this will be a big problem since the computer is in my bedroom.

klipsch promedia 2.1 is another speaker system which is good. Most people love them but many say, that they stop working after 2 yrs. Is this a widespread problem?? Also these aren't easily available in baroda.

Or should i save some money and go for ATP 3 ??

So which one should i go for ?? I am using integrated realtek audio and don't plan to change that. i don't game. Will be using it primarily for movies and music.

the hissing is there only at full volume but i never found the need to take it past the halfway mark (3/5) and most of the time would use it at 2/5

and do do invest in a sound card.. get a sb live 24 bit at least

m considering buying the same... are they low on bass ?? !!

no they arent low on bass. depends what bass you are looking for. every1 has a diff. opinion about bass so its best if you can hear them before you buy.

also as bottle said the hissing sound is there when volume is at full. i never go past the 3/5 volume so its not that big of a problem.

The MX 5021 is back ported. The bass perception depends quite heavily on placement. It needs to be kept a foot or two out from the wall if the sub faces forward.

I have kept it right up against the wall but facing sideways. The bass volume picks up quite a bit. You might like this config if you're bass-headed, or find hi-fi speakers have less bass than you like (pretty common if you come from computer speakers).

Personally, I like tight and defined bass over flabby and loose bass. The MX is a little looser than I like, but miles ahead of most 'computer' 'subwoofers'.

nope mx5021 was never shrill .. i did face this problem occasionally when sound would get shrill but slightly increasing and decreasing volume on the control pod would make it go away.. not sure why that is

and no its not weak on bass, in fact i found it slightly boomy . but ppl who want boom boom setups get a logitech set or a klipsch gmx series set

Yes, the MX's have a problem at the top end if you turn the treble all the way up, and in the bass all the way up or down. I listen (and evaluate) to all my systems flat. It's tough to do that with the MX's as there is no center detent for the tone controls, or a center marker. I have to count it in clicks to determine the exact center point.

When properly tuned, they sound fine. Not enough for critical listening, but just fine for background and timepass.

The crossovers use EL caps and soft iron core inductors. Not good, but for the money what can you expect? I had to apply bypass caps to the tweeters to get them to sound good.

Note that I am extremely anal about my sound preferences, and these extreme measures don't apply to everyone. They work well and are relatively cheap. I would say a step or two below entry-level auiophile speakers, but a good introduction to audio.

@bottle: Experiment with positioning. The 5021 has a bottom-mounted back port, probably the most difficult to position correctly due to bass lift from reflections off the floor and back/side wall. If you want to reduce the flab try stuffing the port with old socks. The bass will become tighter and deeper. There will be less of it though, so one has to survive the temptation of increasing the bass control to compensate. After a day you will get accustomed to the sound and start hearing the lower notes better.

To the OP on the ATP3: Don't get the ATP3. I just bought a set for a friend's new rig. He is delighted with them, I absolutely hate them. They have nasal midrange due to the downfacing mid driver, the microdrivers cover too wide a frequency range, and the imaging absolutely blows (not blows your mind) unless the speakers are very far apart, not likely on a computer table.

The only good thing is the bass, which is well-defined and relatively immune to placement, as the driver only ever faces only one direction and is not ported as far as I can see.

This is the first time I have HAD to use EQ or tone controls to get a system to sound passably good. Definitely not on my recommended list.

Surprisingly, I first heard these speakers 7 years back and they sounded awesome then - maybe my ears have evolved or (more likely) they've dropped the specs to bring it into a lower price point.

I still think the 621 (the last high-end model AL made) were the best ever 'computer' speakers.

ok tell me.. how Wud a guy listening to an INTEX 5.1 Speaker system on realtek ac97 ( not HD ) feel while listening mx5021 on auzentech 24 bit 96 khz Soundcard ?? !!!

Regarding the hiss, it is definitely there, but I don't even notice it any more. And as someone pointed out, under normal use you don't need to crank up the volume more than 2/5th of maximum.

i remember muting the microphone tab or some option for my sound card and it reduced the hiss quite a bit. not sure since it was quite some time back

Look close enough and you will find problems everywhere . Popula vote still is for ATP3 . Best is go with your budget . you cant go wrong there .

i am also having 5021 and my reply will be same. i found lack of bass. these speakers may provide tight bass but i personally feel it lacks power. here i am comparing it with z2300 (200W RMS)
some people might feel that z2300 give boomy sound but i didn't feel anything like that. here in india i tried same sound from 5021 with my mobo on board HD sound / Audigy 2 ZS / Creative x Mod --> output is different with every experiment but still cant match z2300.

^^The less said about logitech speakers, the better :p. Closing the rear port on the mx5021 is the easiest way to avoid boom.

Believe him what he says:eek:hyeah:

Hey chaos you said VS4121 is better than ATP3, can you explain it a bit?
the price of VS4121 has dropped to same as ATP3 :S
and what is the difference between VS4121 & VS4221?
@eagle004= It's not the bass you want all the time, first listen to them.
+1 to MX5021
