Hey guys. I dont know if anyone of you'll owns the Amazon Kindle, but there are 2 new models on the horizon. The new, NEW kindle and the larger screened kindle DX.

Does anyone own any of these? They look pretty overpriced, and the yummy e-ink screen, slim size and wow factor are the only excuses to own one. I don't do much reading, but paying upwards of $300 for an ebook reading device is slightly criminal.

Anyone having it can justify why they bought it.

Cheers!

I prefer owning and reading e-books but doing it on the laptop is stressing on the eyes. So I intend to buy the kindle and still waiting for someone to come back. Buying it from KMD is like paying for 10" screen DX model and getting the 6" screen.

I've been reading ebooks on my Dell Axim Pocket PC for ages now (very comfortable with it and ubook for PPC). I have a couple friends who have bought the Kindle. It looks good in the daylight - very good. However, in dim places, I find that paperbacks (or any paper) are much better to read than the Kindle. For some reason, the 'legibility' isn't there in dim light. The Kindle doesn't have any backlight option which is a drawback.

I am planning to buy a netbook solely for ebooks and surfing. A 10" screen with ubook reader looks awesome - the fonts are very crisp and you can do much more than you can with the Kindle.

Overall, the Kindle is great - the one with the 6" screen is good, but somehow it lacks the appeal you find in a paperback. I can't comment on the larger screen Kindle since its not out yet.

Edit:
Check the screenshot of ubook on a normal laptop screen - it is very easy on the eyes.

these days I feel like buying a second hand netbook, opening it up and housing it into a slate like enclosure with a tablet/touchscreen overlay.

tablet pcs are so expensive and these ebook readers can't be annotated.. plain text can anyways be read on smartphones.

^Free Radical, you should then wait for one of those newer touchscreen netbooks that will be available this year. Much cheaper than a regular Tablet PC.

In fact, thats my dilemma as well, I want to go for the Asus 1000HE (due to its 9 hour battery life, primarily), or, wait for a touchscreen netbook (would be much like my current pocketPC, just with a LARGE screen).

Bought a 1000HE - ebooks are great on it with ubook!! Its not exactly lightweight, but, with wifi off, I get well over 8 hours reading time on a single charge!

Not only that, but I can view comics in all their coloured glory as well. I'm glad I didn't buy the Kindle.

I read lot of ebooks and its extremely straining to go through books for hours together on regular displays. I also need something like kindle but not tht expensive, the kindle is grossly overpriced @15k.:S

Something tht does not strain the eyes and can read any ebook(pdf) files within 5k.

^ what software do you use to read? I find reading on my pocketPC or the netbook as good as a book, doesn't strain my eyes.

Try a RTF or TXT or HTM on ubook and then see how it goes, also, please make sure its not black text on a white background else your eyes will beg for mercy, since LCDs are very bright as it is. Make sure its a light gray background and black text (like that screenshot above) - its very easy on the eyes.

For 5K, I doubt you could get an ebook reader - unless you can get hold of a used netbook for 8K or so (those earlier Asus 2G and 4G models).
