I'm picking up a UPS in a day or two but have to decide between the 800 VA and the 1KVA model.

The UPS will be used for running these two computers:

RIG 1

E8500

4GB RAM

GTX 260

VX450

3 HDDs

22 inch LG monitor

RIG 2

E6300

2GB RAM

1 HDD

No monitor there (Headless server)

Now will the 800 VA suffice or should I go in for the 1 KVA?

I've been quoted Rs 5400 for the 800 VA and 6400 for the 1KVA model. Also, how much battery backup can I expect if both the rigs are running? Even the ballpark figures will do.

Thanks in advance!:)

If both the rigs are running

Apc 800va will be sufficient and will give backup upto 3-8mins depending on load.

For more backup time Apc 1000VA will give backup upto 5- 10mins depending on load.

But APC 800VA will suffice

If you just want to save your works and shut down/hibernate your machine, APC 800va will do.

Alright, get a fair idea now.. One more thing.. does APC give the option of shutting down the computer automatically if there is less battery backup available??

I have heard that 800VA isnt made anymore, but since you have been given quotes, then maybe your dealer has few pieces left.

Well, anyways I bought the 1000VA on Oct 31st and it was DOA. Got a replacement only yesterday. Although I heard how good APC service was, somehow my experience turned out to be completely opposite. Maybe it is only in Bangalore. :(

I dont know dude. The unit I bought had defective PCB and Battery. They replaced the PCB and Battery after like 2 weeks and again, even the new battery was defective. Finally, I had fight with their manager and he agreed to give me a new unit which was delivered yesterday. Haven't yet tested that one (charging), but have really low hopes for that too.

So in my case atleast, they've failed on both fronts quality and service!! But like I said could be a Bangalore only issue.

As it always is the case here in India, I don't have a better option than APC at the moment..

Going to pick up the piece up on Monday if I manage to come back from work on time. Will let you guys know then.. more or less decided on the 1kVA model..
