didn't get the exide or amaron or luminous battery in my area. the people just say that there is no such battery and got confused after i showed them a printout of battery part from exide site.
I just got the Exide Powersafe 1234W Model 9AH battery for Rs 850. Hope it gives good performance.

APC guy quoted Rs 1100 for the 9AH battery and an additional Rs 250 for coming and doing the installation.

Btw I just installed the battery and its charging, haven't connected any load. How long do I have to leave it charging before connecting any devices?

^ that's a nice buy. i only got a 7ah from the apc store for 950/- :(

i left it charging for around 6 hrs. 6 hrs should be enough to fully charge up new batteries.

:) :) Here the APC guy quoted Rs 850 for 7AH. How much backup are you getting on the 7AH battery?

Thanks for info! :)

backup is just around 24 mins. the 9ah should give around 35mins.

i'll upgrade my ups to a 1100 es sometime later. it's supposed to give around 45-50mins if on my same config.

Oh ok. Whats your config? Cause even when I got the UPS 2.5 years back I max got 20 min backup. My config is in my sig, but at that time I had only 2 hard disks and also didnt have the 9600gt.

Anyway right now my UPS is charging with the new Exide battery, but PowerChute shows that battery has charged 65% but estimated battery time is shown as only 7 minutes with ZERO load. Why is that? :( :(

Edit : Its showing as fully charged but estimated battery backup is given as 12 min without any load. :( Does a new battery take some time to reach its full backup capacity?

Did you encounter any additional connector (other than the + & - connections of the battery) as mentioned by 6pack in post no. 8?

my ups was showing 0 min backup on fully charged battery and it would shutdown my comp in a sec whenever power cut off. Problem is with the microprocessor in ups, not the battery. unless the microprocessor is re-calibrated it won't show correct backup time. i tried recalibrating my ups @30% load, but nothing happened. It still shuts the cmp down within 1-2 mins.

APC recommends a 40% constant load on a fully charged battery till battery is discharged and ups shuts down automatically.

I just disconnected the usb wire from ups to comp so it wont give false info to the comp now. I know it's not the solution but its frustrating when the comp shuts down in a sec in front of your eyes.

There are no additional connectors other than the + and -. I just disconnected the two wires, replaced the battery and connected them again.

Oh, now I connected the computer to it and the backup time is given as <1 min. :( :(

So how do we recalibrate the UPS? But even without the USB connection, the UPS starts beeping immediately if I disconnect the mains supply. :( :(

Will it be a defective battery or problem with the UPS itself as you suggested?

^ let the battery charge for atleast 8-12 hrs without load. For testing the battery backup time, and possible recalibration of the ups load it with gls lamps. i think the 650 supports max load of 330 watts. so 40% will be around 132 watts load. That's a 100w gls + 40w gls. Or if you want to be exact you could use cfl lamps too. Just let the lamps run down the ups till it shuts down. You can then calculate the runtime of your battery depending on the runtime you get with the lamps.

If the ups shuts down in a min as you say, to see if ups is culprit -

discharge any saved current in ups by this method:

switch off and unplug ups from power socket.

unplug the battery inside. then press and hold the ups power button for 5 secs.

I tried it on my ups and frankly speaking nothing seems to have happened. I was expecting a beep or something :S but after doing that, there was some improvement in backup percent shown. it did not show true backup time though, so don't keep too high hopes.

i just used a 100w lamp and got 27 mins backup. my comp load is 120watts so it will get around 20 -25 mins max backup.

if after all this if ups still shuts down in less than a min, then it could be a defective battery.

I have charged for about 9 hours now. Will try the discharge method and the lamp process tomorrow.

When I called APC few days back they said you can reset the UPS by pressing the black button on the side of the UPS. Did you try that?

Btw did you contact APC regarding this?

^ i thought that black button was the fuse reset or something like that. i tried asking on the apc website but it kept logging me out for some reason. after that i lost interest.

Ok this thread was very helpful. What's the best option? I don't wanna buy from APC as they'll be costly. Best options please?

Exide powersafe??? TIA.

Bought the battery yesterday. Have a query. Both my LCD and PSU has non-indian connectors (As in i need adaptors to plug it into 3 pin socket) Will it be okay if i connect an extention like this:

Belkin : Essential Series 6-Socket Surge Protector

to a socket on the UPS and connect the tower and LCD to the extension?

Reason i'm asking this is because otherwise i'll have to use 2 adaptors to connect tower ad lcd to the UPS and i want to avoid that :p

yes its ok. i've connected my comp that way too. most of my connected equipment have those American type plugs. best scenario would be to buy an extension strip with individual switches.
