Deformation due to excessive heat
According to a report on AppleInsider, Apple is recalling MacBook Pro batteries that were manufactured between February and May of 2006. The recall said that certain MacBook Pro would deform from excess heat, although Apple did not say whether the heat was from the batteries themselves or from the MacBook Pro.
The recall is only for batteries that were included with the 15-inch MacBook Pro. Affected batteries are ones with model number A1175 and have a 12-digit serial number ending with U7SA. U7SB or U7SC. According to the support release:
We recently discovered that some 15-inch MacBook Pro batteries supplied to Apple do not meet our high standards for battery performance. To give our users the best experience possible, we will replace these batteries for customers free of charge. The affected batteries do not pose a safety risk. You may continue to use your current battery until a replacement arrives.
Despite the note indicating that the affected batteries do not pose a safety hazard, it's fairly safe to assume that it would be best to avoid using the battery until a replacement arrives. Apple is conducting the recall through its website, but those who need to exchange more than three batteries will have to call Apple directly. Apple said that the exchange will take approximately three to five business days but shipping times may fluctuate depending on availability
Apple recently announced official support for customers with MacBook Pros that exhibited the whine noises. Customers are asked to call Apple directly for this issue. The MacBook Pro family has been a victim of a number of problems since its release earlier this year. The right-side fan in my own 2.16GHz MacBook Pro broke down last week.
