The Package
The iPhone has the following in the package :-
> The Dock
>Stereo Headset with mic
>USB/power cable
>Charger
>Cleaning Cloth
>Manual
and of course the iphone.
The occasional cd rom was missing (I guess price cuts ) though all the software it needs is the punny 30-40mb itunes. The charger I must say is pretty small as well.
The impressive headset is nothing different then any other ipod headphone ,except when you notice there's a small rectangular plastic with it,it is the microphone ofcourse what else, but it has been beautifully incorporated with the iphone, single click accepts calls, pauses, plays music,a quick double tap skips a song and so on,I did'nt think that mic was actually a button too, until i read the manual :ashamed: .
Aesthetics
The iphone in my opinion is one of the best looking mobile device we have, its slimmer than slim, sexier than sexy and once you hold it in your palm you realize your indeed holding a impressive piece of electronics.
The phone is incredibly thin for what it has , it is indeed one of the slimmest phones I have used, there are and would be probably more slimmer phones but i bet none pack as much technology as this one.The phone is almost half as slim as the htc that i have, and is as slim as the video ipod.
Screen
The next thing that quickly attracts your attention is the beautiful 3.5' screen ,the quality is impeccable -it is 160ppi and the resolution is 480x320 ,i guess a little less than its competitors, but I dont think it holds it back anyway.Playing a video from you tube (a integrated app) on it is just awesome,we usually watch them at much higher resolution screens and hence they blow out a lot,but watching it on phone is different experience.
Interface & Applications
Apple has been know for developing innovative and simple interfaces ,and has done just that in the iphone, the interface is simple and works smart. The applications and along with the options icon are on main screen ,or shall is the only screen,it is like modeless cause u can access every feature and return to the main screen with home button.
Speaking of which there are only 4 physical buttons on the phone, the power/sleep ,volume control, vibration/ringer and the home button. The home button is on the bottom center of the phone while the vibration and volume buttons are on the left side, and the power button on the top right.
The home button will pull you back to the main screen no matter what your doing.
The Safari Browser
The browser is one of best mobile browsers I have seen ,I have surfed on mobile for some time, starting with the wap browser back from 6600 days, and have used ie mobile and opera on my htc too,but both are much more limited than safari ,it has been able to open my university login page upto the last details,it also opens google video's and plays it like the you tube app, though this only works on google other streaming site dont seem to work as well. But again this is more than what i expected of a mobile browser. You can double tap to zoom the screen and stretch your fingers to literally zoom in or zoom out the screen the same thing works with pictures as well.
The other apps included are:-
>Calender - You can setup reminders and to do's for a particular day and time.
>You tube - A completely integrated app which is pretty fun to use as the video quality is pretty impressive.
>Stocks - As the name implies, you can add stocks for different companies and they are updated everytime you have a net connection available (or thats what I think).
>Maps - A integrated google map app, just like using it from the web again you can zoom in/out using your fingers and although it cant substitute gps but still a handy application.
>Whether - A simple whether app just as in vista, you can add different cities and they are update as and when you open the app.
>Clock - Should I explain??
>Calculator - Same with this one!
>Notes ....
>Mail-
NOTE Email works with wifi,it was just that I hadnt configured it right, gmail requires you to change settings on the web to enable it to be used.
>Ipod I guess this was the inspiration for the iphone ,the phone comes in two variants 4 and 8gig and they were priced at $500/600 until few days back when the prices were slashed to $300/400.Mine is a 8gig variant and it uses flash based memory. The iphone has a little addition in the interface against my video ipod , you can scroll albums using album art and set playlists using that as well.Otherwise its the same old ipod but with a 3.5' oomph screen .
Sensory Perception There are couple of extras on the iphone that have never been seen before, the addition of few sensors. There is a proximity sensor which regulates the light and power scheme of the phone depending on phones distance from the ear.So when your like giving a phone number to someone else from your phone book and you take the phone off from the ear you have to press a button evertime so that the phone display lits up, at least the sensor avoids this ,the phone automatically lits up as soon as you take it away from your ear.
The other sensor is position oriented and as soon as you tilt the phone the screen changes from landscape to portrait and so forth also the display can be seen from anyside left or right either way. This is a healthy addition as well.
Keyboard The iphone doesnt have a physical keyboard, but uses a on screen keyboard and we all know any foray in this direction by any phone maker have not been successful. But Apple has taken this step in right direction the keyboard is not something to drool over in the phone. The keys are placed nicely but you cant type as fast as you would on a physical keyboard. Its a hit and miss sometimes but you can easily correct it.And i feel its a matter of usage once i become used to it.But again I would say a physical keyboard is better anytime.
Conclusion
As you would have realized I have been totally mesmerized by the iphone and have used a lot of flowery lang for it and I believe it truly deserves it.Apple has not done something revolutionary but only excelled in whatever was already there.
The good things:-
Pros>Awesome battery life (After a full recharge the wifi was on all the time,I had been using the ipod for listening to music, seen atleast about an hour of video on youtube, surfed the web again atleset for more than an hour. Then had a call of over 3hrs and small calls of about 30mins.And then the battery died, engadget confirmed this as well
The phone itself has made leaps and bounds in terms of entertainment on the go,if you have a edge connection you are probably gonna have some serious fun with this phone. The interface is purely one of the best for any phone carrying so many things.
The phone has its share of cons and here they are-:
>Camera - It has no software for it literally just a camera and click pictures,no zoom,no settings, nothing.
>No video recorder
>No voice commands (A app might come pretty soon, but nothing from apple)
>The keyboard is slower than a physical keyboard.
>Email is a letdown than what was expected. (Email works with wifi - I wasnt configuring it right)
This is my first review for anything ,and it definitely lacks what a full preview should have(I will update this a bit more in the near future). But honestly I dont have that kind of time and that I have only used the phone for about 2-3days.Some of the details come from engadget (ie abt the email coz I havent used the feature- I tried using it but I could'nt use it over wifi). The phone has been unlocked by me and I have not activated it from att (for a 2yr plan with a minimum monthly rent of $60) -no thanks.I'm using my previous sim with it and works perfectly fine, lemme know guys if you happen to have a iphone which needs unlocking!

Playing relatively high bitrate VGA H.264 videos, our iPhone lasted almost exactly 9 freaking hours of continuous playback with cell and WiFi on (but Bluetooth off). Yeah, we had to pick our jaws up off the floor, too. So by our tests, you could watch a two hour movie and drain off a little more than 22% of the battery -- totally acceptable for trip-taking and the like.
Our music testing showed similarly outstanding results. Playing back 160-192Kbps MP3s, our iPhone pushed about 29 hours and 30 minutes music playback. To put that in perspective, the Apple claims the iPod nano gets about 24 hours playback on a full charge, and the iPod a scant 14 - 20 hours.
To do a little simple math, you could watch two hours of video, listen to 8 straight hours of music, and still have only drained off less than half your device's capacity
The phone itself has made leaps and bounds in terms of entertainment on the go,if you have a edge connection you are probably gonna have some serious fun with this phone. The interface is purely one of the best for any phone carrying so many things.
