It was bound to happen sooner or later, Apple is warning that some of its new iPods are infected with a Windows virus. Apple says that a "small number" of video iPods, produced after September 12th 2006, were infected with the RavMonE.exe virus. The company has received fewer than 25 reports of infected iPods.

Apple says the virus infected only the video iPod and not the Nano or any of the Apple computers. The iPods were infected by a Windows machine at a contract factory.

Apple is placing some of the blame on the Windows operating system and said, "As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it."

The RavMonE virus doesn't cause any serious damage or data loss, but it does act as a trojan horse that could allow other, more serious, viruses to infect the computer.

The offending computer has been found and dealt with and Apple says it doesn't expect any more infected iPods to be produced.

Small Number of Video iPods Shipped With Windows Virus

We recently discovered that a small number - less than 1% - of the Video iPods available for purchase after September 12, 2006, left our contract manufacturer carrying the Windows RavMonE.exe virus. This known virus affects only Windows computers, and up to date anti-virus software which is included with most Windows computers should detect and remove it.

So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free. As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it

Yeah. Blame Windows. When will those idiots understand that if someone had put a Mac virus on that it would be their OS getting screwed. The Mac is hardly invulnerable. I wish coverity would do a scan of darwin...

APPLE IS trying to pin the appearance of a virus which has shown up on its video iPods on its rival Microsoft.
According to Bizjournals, Apple has found a small number of its Video iPod devices sold after September 12 carried a virus called RavMonE.exe, that affects computers running Microsoft's Windows.

According to a FAQ on a technical support page the appearance of the virus is all Redmond's fault because Windows was not tough enough to prevent such viruses. Although Apple says that it is more upset with itself for not checking its products for viruses before they shipped, it seems to think that it is a Windows fault rather than a quality control problem.

Of course Apples are not vulnerable to viruses, because they run on OSX, so one has to wonder what a Video iPod is doing running Windows in the first place.
