Rumor: Apple could make a bid for EA - The Tech Report

Could Apple attempt to purchase one of the world's biggest game developers and publishers? The Mac maker is at least considering it, according to Guy Adami from CNBC's Fast Money. TheStreet.com sums up his prediction as follows in a show recap:

Adami noted that there is chatter that Apple (AAPL Quote) is eyeing Electronic Arts(ERTS Quote) as a takeover target.
Yeah—not exactly the most thorough analysis for such an unlikely prediction. The notion of a deal between the two companies may not be so far-fetched, though. Apple has been hiring a number of chip designers lately, including two former CTOs from AMD's graphics division.

Not only that, but according to PC Magazine, Apple recently poached the "senior director of business, insights and strategy" for the European division of Microsoft's Xbox business. Add to that the fact that Apple has been pimping its iPod touch as a gaming device—the "funnest iPod ever"—and a major gaming-related acquisition could make sense.

Oh, and as TG Daily points out, Apple is riding high on the success of iPhone and iPods—and it has ample cash reserves to show for it. EA's market capitalization is $6.86 billion just now, whereas TG Daily says Apple has about $29 billion in the bank.

I dont know whether its the good thing or the bad, as Apple is more known for making "hip" products, wonder if they can improve the content...

Great... Now we will get games all starting with an i in shiny white boxes that cost $200 each and they will be better of on your showcase than in your computer.

Get ready to throw your gaming rigs if they plan to make only Mac specific games later!! Apple really needs to pull gamers on their side.. There are very few games on Mac as of now!! may be this will change the trend..

For that, first they will need to put high end GPU's in Mac's. Apple creates Mac's in such a way that retail high end Graphics cards cannot be used. They usually get their own custom high cards created through OEM's and sell them at exorbitant prices.

An age old 1900XT costs $399 through Apple.

Its more likely that they would get into Console or hand held gaming business as the rumors indicate.

What was EA good for anyway? Other than a couple of standout titles that were actually developed by other companies, most of their current games are worthy of the trash can.

Great!! Two of my most hated companies coming together.

I don't know what is gonna happen but i do expect something like EA to change to perhaps iEA or Electronic Apple.

start for mac games ? errr...if its true they'll exaggerate with their shiny product and say $90 per title or shud i say $89. %#%# off steve..

who is gonna buy games if they are released only for apple.windows are the best gaming rigs on the planet

Apple does not have Direct X, only OpenGL and most game devs use game engines based on DX, besides that its easier to port console games to PC than on MAC. I think most game devs won't release games for a very small amount of comp users, PC hardware market is already suffering, releasing MAC only games will ruin the devs.
