Buying an iPhone 4? Better wait.

The September iPhone will bring with it a new dual-core CPU, the same Apple A5 processor found in the iPad 2 (though it may be underclocked to conserve battery life). Bloomberg contradicts previous reports saying its sources close to Apple are saying that their will be a 8 megapixel image sensor for the rear camera (previous reports suggested the phone would retain its 5 MP sensor).

The sources at Apple suggest that the phone will look a lot like the current iPhone.

The launch of the fifth gen. iPhone will also correspond with the launch iOS 5. One key advance in the new operating system will be the introduction of over-the-air (OTA) updates, a feature long supported by Android. Other reports indicate that the new iPhone may grace the Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) or Deutsche Telekom AG's (DTE) T-Mobile network in the U.S.

In related news, Bloomberg also claimed that its sources delivered information on two other pending Apple gadgets. One will be a low-priced, smaller version of the iPhone, based on the hardware of the iPhone 4. That device will be aimed at developing countries -- an area where struggling Finnish phone maker Nokia Oyj. (HEL:NOK1V) has traditionally dominated.

A new iPad is also rumored to be coming, which uses a scaled up version of the "Retina Display" found in the iPhone 4. The device would boost about a third higher screen resolution and would include a more responsive touch layer.

It is rumored that Apple is planning to bump up the launch of the sixth generation iPhone to Spring 2012. Possibly named the "iPhone 5" (assuming the "iPhone 4 GS" rumor holds true), the phone is expected to deliver a major hardware update, along the lines of the update in the fourth generation.

DailyTech recently spoke to a former Apple executive who disclosed that the company is hoping to release iOS-powered LCD television sets sometime late this year or early next year, as well.

As usual, Indian launch after one year :P
The iPad 2 saw a much faster launch compared to the iPhone 4/3GS/3G and the iPad. So probably we can expect the newer models to hit Indian shores quicker. I am not sure about the iPhone though. The budget iPhone might very well be targeted for India. :P

If only they sold the FU model of the iPhone here at a good price a la iPad and iPad 2. :(

If there is a budget iphone(which will still cost 15-20k:P) then we can expect simultaneous launch in india and other prepaid markets as apple is repeatedly saying the same thing:"we need a product for prepaid market"

whatever plans they have its too early to speculate now. If their budget phones are in the 15k range, they will have a really good response from people wanting to get their hands on one. And knowing apple, they might get something into the market that might give the other phones a run for their money.

What would be a budget iphone like? Slower processor? Small screen? Less storage?

Can only speculate now.

It will have the last gen 1Ghz A4 processor, same retina display used in ipod touch 4G( its cheaper than iphone 4's retina display), same 256MB ram used in ipod touch 3G,4G and 8GB storage.

Just a wild guess :P

After so many years you guys still believe in rumors. One should wait till a official announcement from apple itslef as most of the apple employees themselves do not know whats cooking inside the steve jobs head.

^ Steve Jobs himself might not know leave apple employees. Anyways on of my source from CA Apple office also confirmed we might see new Iphone in AUG/SEP lets see :)

I just read this on TOI website. Don't know whether to laugh or not.

Source - iPhone 3GS price cut to Rs 19,990 - The Times of India

Yes, you read that right. According to cellphone dealers, Apple is "re-launching" its two-year-old iPhone at a price of Rs 19,990 in India. The move is likely to counter cheap Android smartphones that have flooded the market recently. This particular version of iPhone will come with 8GB internal storage.

Manish Khatri, a mobile dealer in Mumbai, tweeted on Friday evening that shops had already received stock and the phone will be available from Saturday at the said price with one year official warranty. In Delhi too, several dealers said they had received stock of iPhone 3GS (8GB) on Thursday evening.

iPhone 3GS was originally released in June 2009. It has a 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen (320 x 480 pixels) and is powered by a 600Mhz processor. However, as it happens in the case of Apple products, the hardware specifications can be misleading when it comes to performance and usability.

Apple's latest iOS version 4.3 supports iPhone 3GS and that makes the phone a worthy opponent to similarly-priced Android devices that have better hardware. Apple has also said that iOS 5 will work on iPhone 3GS though it is likely that not all features will be supported.

At the price of Rs 19,990, iPhone 3GS will directly compete with Samsung Nexus S, a phone that saw its price fall by over Rs 6,000 to touch Rs 19,999 a few weeks ago. Nexus S, which runs on Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread, has a 4-inch capacitive screen. It is powered by a 1Ghz processor, packs 512MB RAM and comes with 16GB internal storage.

^To be fair its a decent 600MHz Cortex A-8 couple with a good GPU like PowerVR SGX535. Its pretty decent power for a HVGA. But just see how many would pick this over the Nexus S though :P (Decent deal if priced in the 17kish range. 20k is bit high but still people would buy. When the Ace with a MSM7227+Adreno 200 and HVGA sells for 14.5k-15k then why not 3GS for 20k :P)

I'm very sure that Apple won't launch a budget version of iPhone. It's very unlike Apple. I am just hoping the prices of iPhone 4 coming down significantly after the iPhone 5 launch. :P

I'm skeptical about a new 'cheaper' iPhone. If anything, there will be furthur price drop for 3GS (ideally ~15k) along with a 'trimmed' down iOS5 (one can always 'unlock' full features via cydia).
Even after iPhone 5, iP4 will be pretty close in features and still stand its own in market (they just launched the Verizon and white version), so don't expect much price drop for that, not in India.
But as DarkAngel said, 3GS is still a potent device in a sense that spec sheet (which is decent btw) comparison between similar androids doesn't effect the legendary iOS usability much, if at all. Add to that apple's far superior 'Updates & Planned Obsolescense' policy and it'll be a pretty sweet deal.
Or maybe I'm turning into an apple fanboy? OMG!

How convenient. Apple's low specs can be 'misleading' and give good performance, whereas Nokia's low specs mean they are incapable. Nokia kare to saala outdated hai!
