Nope the 3G S is a complete revamp. Its got a new CPU, extra RAM and a new graphics chipset too. But the point you made is valid. Comparing the 3G S with the older iphone, its a good leap forward. But when compared to the other offerings, its got nothing new or path breaking. That's what you can expect from Apple anyway. Little upgrades here and there, and they still sell in millions.
^^ If you did not get it from my post earlier, I am an Apple fan too. But just for their marketing prowess, not really for their products. Apple appeals to the brand enthusiast in me, not the technology freak.
I am a typical geek who likes to have complete control of his electronic gadgets, and the iPhone just does not allow that. I mean seriously, a phone in 2009 not having multi-tasking just seems crippled for a purpose. My late-2006 k790i has multi-tasking for crying out loud! The most basic features of a phone are touted as upgrades in the 3GS which completely sucks. Again, I know all about the hardware upgrades in the 3GS as well.
To Apple's credit, atleast they haven't called the new phone iPhone 2 - its just an extension and not a new model.
