NEW DELHI: Smartphone maker Apple has singled out India for raising the price of iPhone 4 while reducing its storage capacity, soon after launching the new model iPhone 4S in the domestic market at the highest price in the world.

The company has raised the price of iPhone 4 by 10% to Rs 37,900. Yet, Indian customers are now getting an 8GB handset, instead of the 16 GB handset they could buy until last week for Rs 34,500.

This is a departure from Apple's practice worldwide. In Singapore, for instance, it reduced the price of its earlier model by S$100 to S$788 when it launched the iPhone 4S. Often, it also gives freebies to customers who buy earlier models when it launches the new product at similar price points.

The new prices make it cheaper for Indian customers to buy the iPhone 4 from abroad. The unlocked version of this handset is 33% cheaper in the US and Hong Kong at Rs 28,500, while it costs Rs 31,500 in Singapore. Experts say the disparity in pricing is resulting in a thriving grey market for iPhones in India.

An industry executive familiar with Apple's pricing strategy told ET that the weaker rupee could be behind the hike. "The rupee has been the worst performer among the markets Apple operates in. The weaker rupee, which has fallen about 15% in the last three months, has also forced other handset makers to increase prices in India," this executive said.

Another executive said the price hike is aimed at ensuring that the earlier model does not cannibalise sales of the iPhone 4S. "Apart from a newer software version and faster speeds, the 4S is largely identical to the earlier model. At the earlier price point, the iPhone 4 would have cost Rs 10,000 less than the 4S. This could have resulted in the flagship product registering lower sales," the executive who did not wish to be named reasoned. However, the company has not attempted to prevent possible cannibalisation of device in any of its other markets.

Apple did not respond to a detailed query from ET on the issue. Last week, the company launched the iPhone 4S at a starting price of Rs 44,500, while the 32 GB model costs Rs 50,900 and the top-end 64 GB model comes for Rs 57,500.

According to Canalys estimates, Apple sold about 100,000 handsets in India between July and September, giving it a 3.6% market share in the smartphone segment.

Wonder who are in the marketing strategy team  and why

Well, 788 SGD is RS 32k

Add the additional taxes, customs in India, and the luxury value of Apple in India : you have the reason for the price hike

"Luxury value of Apple in India" LOL.....amazing reasoning for the price.

But anyways, its not about price, its all about the policy which they have adopted only for India.

Still people ask when they see the line: Apple is Evil..

Well atleast for the Indians they are mighty evil. Delayed launches first, now this. How do u like em apples now peeps ?

Well, brand value always carries a premium

So you mean to say that Apple has only brand value in India and not in Singapore?

As per your calculation, it seems so...... ;)

It does have a higher brand value and exclusivity in India as compared to Singapore.

Though it is a self fulfilling thing

High price -> less people buy -> More showoff value -> high price accepted

Same applies for LCD TV's as well,

32 inch LCD's in Dubai are much cheaper than equivalents in India

difference between 40 inch TV's is relatively less

Because, 32 inch is positioned as a standard item there, while they position LCD's in general as a premium technology in India, selling CRT's at the standard device level

Thanks for letting us all know about it. ;)

I am happy that you are happy in justifying the price and policy ;)

Enjoy.......

Smart move by Apple I would say. They must have already realized what the typical iPhone user base is like in this country. In US when a new iPhone hits the market, most people wouldn't want to buy the old ones, So they have to reduce the prices. In India, like it or not, majority of the iPhones are bought by people who have too much money, but never seem to need a phone for anything but make calls. These sort of people just want a phone whose price they can flaunt to advertise their financial prowess. There are very few iPhone's among the tech savy community and most of these people get their iPhones by importing them from other countries at fair prices anyway.

When greedy merchants can dare to sell a new iPhone at > 70k in the gray market and still find enough idiots to buy them, why should Apple be content with their current prices. They might as well increase them as they would sill not loose much of their main market in the country.

I don't think rupee value fluctuations have anything to do with it. That would have made sense for a product that was sold with tight margins or have a direct relationship with dollar prices, but Considering these are premium products that are sold without any direct relation to their dollar or euro prices, I don't think it has anything to do with it.

Guys, it Apple. Even if they make a toilet paper roller with Apple logo on it, call it the iShit there are idiots in this world to buy it. Even if its 199 USD.

So, lets not go about wasting our time in this meaningless discussion.

This is pathetic. I love Apple Design and the Seamless Software & Hardware Integration but what sort of pricing is this?

As customers are paying a premium their greed seems to be unsatiated. Their Profit Statements shows 40% margin by sales of iPhone and now it will be increased to 50%.

Its time to wake up.....
