Apple To Replace HDD in 4GB iPod mini with Flash Memory?
(Source:http://www.i4u.com/article4047.html)

The EETimes reports that Apple bought 40 percent of the NAND flash production of Samsung in the second half of this year. The report goes on saying that the flash memory would be used to replace the hard-drive in the 4GB iPod mini.

A story on AppleInsider indicates that the 4GB iPod mini is going to be discontinued as availability has tightened. The more common rumor is that 2GB and 4GB iPod shuffle players will come. it was already reported about this rumor in June. This week a listing of a 4GB iPod shuffle appeared on shopping.com (via Engadget) , but with no details. So it would be saver to assume the 4GB NAND memory from Samsung would be used for higher capacity shuffles, but then who knows.

A 4GB flash based iPod mini, what would be the benefit? Can it be smaller? Cheaper? Better Battery life? With a flash memory they do not have to do any buffering or other stuff to deal with vibrations and shocks. A smaller mp3 player with display, high battery life and 4GB storage would be not bad at all.
It is expected that Steve Jobs will announce new iPods at the Apple Expo in Paris site , which takes place from the 20th to the 24th of September.
