Application to monitor downloads over a network

Is there an app for Windows which allows you to view what is being downloaded on each machine connected to the network? I have 7-8 devices connected to an Asus RT-N66u and would like to know which device is responsible for consuming how much bandwidth.

OR

Is there an app which will let me specify bandwidth limits according to IP?

@blr_p Your inputs will be much appreciated here since you seem to be TE's resident Networking Guru!

1. This would be down to the router itself. Whether the firmware allows for this sort of differentiation. 3rd party fw gives you more control here. But that means flashing stuff.

2. Look at QoS settings for your router, parental controls even.

I'm still waiting for a reply from you in your previous thread, can you do that.

I've successfully used Netlimiter in the past for this scenario.
But doesn't NetLimiter have to be installed on each machine for it to show data from them?

I'm using 2 laptops, a tv, 3 mobiles, a PS3, and an ipad on this network. I want to know how much bandwidth each device consumes and if possible a weekly or monthly breakup of how much data each device consumed...

^^ I had used Netlimiter V2 and it was supposed to be installed on each machine. They were supposed to come up with remote administration in Version3. A couple of months back I had suggested this software to one of my friends for a similar issue as yours. He reported that it worked for him. If you say that it still needs to be installed on each machine (only PCs) then he must've been lying. :D

DD-WRT or Tomato. If you want more ingrained info - you may need to use a plugin - but I dont think its developed anymore - which used to work with WRT.

@blr_p Possible that SNMP may be a solution?

SNMP will give overall bandwidth consumption, but not application used or file downloaded etc.

@axeman - Will have to do a relook on the same. I did try enabling it on the N13 but to no avail. AFAIK, its may be possible if the proper filter or adjustments are in place - because thats the way SNMP works.

You need to really read up what SNMP can and cannot do. It is at best aggregated and summarised information, none of the SNMP tables have the data you are looking for, unless you have a netflow enabled device, and even that is rudimentary at best.

Set up one system on your network as the default gateway for other devices as well as the proxy. Force redirect all traffic to connect to the Internet via this device, and you will be able to track and control the Internet usage based on the proxy software you use. Many free options available, most common is squid.
