Linux Arch Linux discussion thread

OK I think I am done (bored) with Arch... after having tried Karmic alpha 3 in VirtualBox I am thinking of putting Ubuntu 9.10 now on my tablet and Kubuntu on my desktop... alpha 3 is stable enough I hope and won't eat my data (backed up already)... :ohyeah:

I'll return to Arch if/when I get 2 mbps unlimited broadband heh. The distro is fun, but its bare (no slickness/bling) and is mostly purely upstream based without the tiny patches which distros apply to fix stability/bugs...

Heh.
I kinda love arch for same reasons you hate it for. so arch is not for you:P

Nah, mainly just got bored now that everything is installed and configured and stable ... Just like I got bored of Jaunty and installed Arch over it, doesn't mean I "hate" the distro being removed :D

I'm now actually thinking of making some free space on my HDD for more partitions so I don't need to keep reinstalling distros and can quad boot - Win7, Arch (will keep it), (K)Ubuntu 9.10 and another distro - maybe Fedora 12... that will be fun/risky thing to try since I've only dual booted til now... but will have to wait til next weekend.

Ah the risks of running a rolling-release distro like Arch... updated my desktop and tablet around the same time to get KDE 4.3 final... desktop survived but tablet was not so lucky... cant start X (blank screen) and cant see anything in the logs... both running the nvidia driver... off I go to search for solutions...

OK some potential deal-breaking problems with Arch...

My Aunt who uses MSN Live Hotmail email said her email recipients informed her that her emails only came with the subject line and with blank body/content/text! So I tested it out and yes, Firefox 3.5.2 on KDE 4.3 x86_64 is a problem.

Even tried with Firefox safe mode with no addons etc still the same problem. Posted the problem on the Arch forums lets see what they have to say if anything.

Tried with FF352 on Kubuntu/Ubuntu 9.10 alpha 4 and it works fine. Chromium packages seem out of date (doesnt build) in the user repositories... and Konqueror is useless on live.com

Another thing I noticed is VirtualBox 3.0.4 doesnt work so well if you run multiple VMs at the same time. When I tried running 2 at the same time there was a drastic performance drop especially in networking...but I have yet to test on other distros...

For the time being I'll boot into Win7 when my Aunt wants to use MSN Live mail but I really hope this problem gets resolved somehow, I don't want to have to drop Arch just for this silly reason :D

oh do you think that is related? i see something in about:config, let me try to disable it...

edit: no that didnt help... something else might be wrong considering it works fine on other latest distros...

2 mbps should be bearable for those who have it, but not for those on even BSNL 512 kbps UL which I've got coz unlimited is important to me :)

dude, I run archlinux on 256kbps UL :P
Dude I run Arch on a 128kbps UL (and it is fully updated as of this second).. you guys have it easy. If I had a 2MBps line, I would probably have 3 or 4 different Arch installs on the hard drive for kicks.

today i had to reboot into windows after so many months just so that my aunt could send her email :hap5: arch was my primary OS for weeks now, i guess its time to bring back kubuntu. its a small issue which should be fixed by i suspect there could be more occurences not to mention other problems like the suspected virtualbox slowness as well. i will still quad boot arch with fedora and others occasionally though just for the coolness factor...

well , since i got bsnl's 8 mbps 50gb plan its become way easier to work with arch :D

i did an update after so long (600 mb) which would have taken 4-5 hrs on my old 512kbps connection and this time it took about 40 min or so! beautiful!

that is roughly 2 mbps average speed i guess. thing is the connection starts off slow then speeds up if the file is large else does not cross 1-2 mbps, if its a large file it will touch 6 mbps which is the max my connection seems to go. hence average of about 2 mbps i guess.

i was also able to update my KDE 4.4 / trunk checkout and compile in like 30 min... it would have taken yet more hours to do that.

Well I've not used it much on Arch but there it seems more stable than Kubuntu 10.04 alpha which I've used much more and there are some very minor issues here n there including a KNetworkmanager crash on logout - but Im guessing its due to the distro itself being in alpha not KDE 4.4.

So you can go for KDE 4.4 once Arch devs put it in the repos - I think I saw emails that they plan to do it soon for 4.4 ... :)

btw, as you are into testing out latest KDE version even before they are out, why not involve yourself with KDE Quality team? they could use your feedback

you can help with KDE Unstable Testing.just test that latest work and make sure everything works as expected. Just a humble suggestion from my side.

KDE Quality Team - KDE Quality Team

yes, good idea. i have thought about it but i sorely lack the time (and discipline) to get involved in a formal team. i like to randomly download and test then possibly file bug reports/feedback/suggestions whenever i can.

for example, i have been "planning" for many months/years but finally last night i attended the ubuntu classroom session introducing how to do a little packaging/bugfixing etc. i will try to follow a few of the other sessions, including the KDE and kernel sessions :)

btw, the ubuntu classroom is the reason why i recently upgraded my 512 kbps connection to 8 mbps (temporarily) so that i can keep up with the rest of the class while they are downloading/working during the classroom session itself! :D

but i was encouraged to see a healthy number of users logged on for the classroom (even though i cant tell how many from india) even though only a few of us were yakking and asking questions in the sessions :) the useless private/govt ISPs should really think about making broadband fast and cheap so any tom, dick and harry who has time/interest can start getting involved... really sad state of affairs today.

Ok.. so I finally decided that I should install Arch now.. 5 years after using Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSUSE n Ubuntu.. Arch should be on the system now.. My system's specs are :-

AMD Phenom II 720 BE

2 GB DDR2 RAM

Onboard ATI 3300 Gfx

250 GB SATA + 1 TB SATA

so which one should I download, the 32-bit one or the 64-bit one.. also how much time will it take to install the kernel, X11, GNOME etc etc.. I'm on 512 kbps UL plan...

@hellknight: about 1-2 hours to download the initial arch 300+mb install ISO then a few more hours to setup and install the rest like GNOME/KDE/apps etc... so keep half a day... or say all day today if its your first time :D
