Hi
On the other day i went to inquire price of linksys wrt54g2(2.5k),he told that linksys 120n(2.9K) is better one in terms of range.etc.

What is this N & G types???Do 'N'type routers are better than 'G' type. Tried to get more info but could not understand much from web.

So, Network gurus please share your thoughts..

Also suggest any other belkin/any brand products (with model number).

TIA.

Re: Are N routers are more superior than G type router?

N types will have transfer speeds upto 300Mbps(typical 80Mbps) while G has max of 54Mbps(typical 20Mbps). So if you only browse internet G type is enough but suppose if u transfer files from on laptop to another using wifi on 'G' you'll get 1-2 MB/sec (bytes)and on 'N' you'll get around 10MB/sec.

But remember you also need to have N capable wifi adapter (mostly you should have it unless it's in an old laptop) else it'll run in 'G' mode only.

Do both of these support torrent downloads(will dl thru desktop).and video chat .

Re: Are N routers are more superior than G type router?

Buy from one of our online dealers in the forum, they will have almost all of the models you may be considering at good prices.

Re: Are N routers are more superior than G type router?

The belkin 150n is not a N router. I mean it is a normal 802.11g/b router with some N feature. Max speed is 150mbps

Re: Are N routers are more superior than G type router?

i have Intel wireless 2915abg. Does that mean its not compatible with wireless N

Re: Are N routers are more superior than G type router?

^^^Backward compatibility is there...so your g card will work with n router but at a speed capped to your card....

Re: Are N routers are more superior than G type router?

also some n routers will have gigabit ports and not a 10/100 mpbps port. Check the hardware properties, and if its supports IEEE 802.11 n, then go for the n router. All N routers will have atleast backward compatibility with 802.11 b/g and some might also support 802.11a too.

Re: Are N routers are more superior than G type router?

not sure but i did read that range is also more in N mode, but it varies from router to router .

That means its a waste for me to buy a "N' Router as this will be for my personal use. Which 'G' based router do you suggest.

If you have a N card or planning to upgrade in near future...then go for N router...otherwise i don't see any advantage...you can get Belkin G router for 1.2k from ebay (1k after discount coupon :D)...

And it needs to be understood one g adapter in a network of n adapters means all n adapters run at g speeds ;)

Ohh...is it...i didn't know it :bleh:

Technically there is a difference but end users normally dont feel it. Its just like Colgate and Naya Colgate. Only if you do internal networking that too all included devices should be N compatible, you may see some spped benifit but normally some bottle neck will arise (chain is as strong as the weakest link wala funda) .... If you are looking it in terms of day to day internet usage, g/b r equally good. Though N will make u future proof but what future are we talking about, in 2-3 years all changes! Cost benifit in b/g per se N hardware will make you ponder though prices are falling but u need to think.

They are superior. No doubt. but most of them are draft-N. There is a difference between N and draft-N. You have to find out in the logo or the manual. If its draft-N, then there is no assurance that you will get 150Mb/s speed. There may variation in speed. Recently through some of the websites i came to know that some Draft- N routers are worst than the G routers. So unless its normal or pure N the speed is not assured.

Thanks all for your suggestion. I got to know the differences between each ones.

Are buffalo router are expensive? Today when i en quired for Wireless-G High Power Router and Access Point WHR-HP-G54 the distributor quoted 3k. and Wireless - Wireless-N 150 for 2.9k+taxes.Each even ebay the price is nearly same.

I thought G router are less as others brands like linksys and belkin are costing 2.5k. Is buffalo products are very good?

Also from the discussion i felt it is better to go for g routers as my requirements are basic.

Please throw some suggestion.

This is not always true. Many n routers can run in dual modes simultaneously..

Even I wanna buy a wireless router , my budget is max. 3k.

I have narrowed down two routers Linksys WRT120N or Netgear DG834G v5... , another brand Buffalo is there , don't know much about it.

Pl. give some suggestions. , I mainly intend to use a laptop , my desktop PC and Ps3 with the wireless router.
