Are Set-top Boxes PC compatible?

Hi freinds,
Im not sure if this query falls in this section but c'd not make out any other apt for it.

U all must be aware of the Tata Sky being launched now as well as the exsting Dish TV services revamping everything to compete. I watched at exhibition a tata sky set top box & it had a COM port behind. Dealer c'd not help me with what it is for exactly. Also there was a Bigger/better looking model but c'd not get info as the company guyz there were too busy.

I've read many US based SKY users have the boxes integrated with their PC's.
My main query here is to some people here already using there DTH services for TV.

Are these set-top boxes PC attachable ?? specifically possible integration with a Media Centre PC ??

What is the COM port for??

Are there other better models which we can buy ourselves for extended features & thet are compatible with indian DTH standards of the co.??

I was wondering the same. Anyway if you want extended services with dish tv, they do sell a DVR(Digital video recorder). Not too sure whether they let you burn dvd's or whether you can connect your pc to a set top box.I doubt that!

Interesting query. I doubt they will be PC compatible. The Rs232 port might be for firmware upgradation.

People who use TATA sky should be able to help :D

ya ...once when i visited ..my cousins ..in london ...i remember ..they had something called as DTH (DIRECT TO HOME )...the company's name was something. NTH ....and my cousins ..told me tht hey had their...Internet,TV .CABLE , And telephone from a single connection...and i was like amazed..by the technology...think...tata sky are following..their footsteps...

You can simply use a capture card and catch the vid on your pc. the issue is only 1 connection / box. You can split the output but u cant tune two different things on 2 tv sets or say tv and pc without additional set top box.

COM port support a max speed of 115 kbips /sec which is nowehere close to what is needed for a good quality AV connection :p

hmmm.....can the VIVO (video in video out )...function..in the gainward 6600gt golden sample edition..used..to capture TV /cable ..video ?if YES how ?

I dont think tatasky will be starting internet because:

1.Even Dish-TV was sayoing the same think from the day they launched and the main points are

2.Tata-Sky has licence only for DTH(television channels)and not for internet. But they can get the licence either by integrating their present TataIndicom with TataSky or by applying for a new licence. And

3.Internet through satellite is a complex tech and it is quite expensive and their main disadvantage is the upload speeds are very low.

To the topic:

I dont think COM port is enabled by our DTH players.

But normal internet usage consists of downloading mostly. I guess the ratio of uploading to downloading is 10:90.
And one implementation dish-internet, I have read about, uses a dedicated dial-up link for upload traffic. Because it must have low latency but doesn't require much bandwidth.

btw is it possible to share a Dish TV connection between multiple TV sets?

It is possible. You will need to to buy a separate STB for the other tv set + pay an additional charge for subscription.

yes...they will b launching the Tata Sky Internet service using the same setup box from July-August 2007. Thats what one of my friends who works there told me...and so did the technician from Tata-Sky... It'll be similar to something HughesNet provides in some other countries!!

Check out HughesNet Services for more info on how it works and tariff it charges there !!

Be prepared for horrid pings, horrid upload rates and horrid latencies overall. Internet over satellite sucks.... completely.

yeah...I agree it completely sucks!! I work as a Technical Support Executive at Sutherland Global Services which has a process for HughesNet....and I know the basic satellite internet technology sucks.... but I guess its good for people who have lived by dailup all their. Mayb also in villages, where the dish mayb the only connection to the outer world... Just not to look at technology from our (mayb rich/urban) view, but with a broader perspective, before calling it "sucks"

WiMax had/has the promise, but we dont see the implementation anywhere. Was expecting WiMax subscriptions for consumers starting from this year :( ...actually was expecting July 2006, when it was first announced !!
