ARM Readying Mali-450 GPU For 2013′s Mid-range Smartphones
ARM has provided details of the upcoming Mali-450 GPU , the successor to Mali 400 GPU .
The Mali 450 will be scalable upto eight cores , while the Mali-400 can be scaled up to four cores . The Mali-450, which is offered as synthesizable RTL, is intended for use in entry-level and mid-range smartphones. The core, codenamed Tyr, has a common software platform with Mali-400 and provides market-leading OpenGL ES2.0 performance.
ARM says that devices with lower performance needs should use 1-4 Mali-400 cores, while 5-8 Mali-450 cores should be used for gadgets that need more graphics oomph.
The Mali-450 will target mid-range phones . The Mali-6xx line is for the high end devices , which offers improved performance and general purpose computing on the GPU (think OpenCL). The Note Galaxy Note 10.1 uses the Mali-604 GPU which already showed some impressive benchmarks recently ( link ) .
