Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel coming to PS3 and Xbox in March

Ahead of today's EA software showcase, the publisher has gone ahead and announced a new Army of Two for PS3 and Xbox 360. Called The Devil's Cartel, this new game is the next project from Visceral Games, developed in DICE's Frostbite 2 engine.

According to EA, this latest game "re-sets the series" with a "more intense, mature, and grittier tone," to the surprise of those of us who found the previous games plenty gritty. Operatives "Alpha" and "Bravo" fight in a drug war in Mexico, making use of "the ability to unleash the power of ultimate destruction."

The Devil's Cartel will be released in March 2013. If you want to follow along with other EA announcements today, you can watch the showcase live here starting at 1pm Pacific/4pm Eastern.

Oh this's awesome news! Looks like there are a hell lot of sequels slated for launch next year. :P

Loved playing both the previous installments. And looks like with each sequel, their respective masks have changed quite a bit.

EA Lays Off Staff, May Have Shut Down Army of Two Developer Visceral Montreal

Electronic Arts has laid off a number of development staff in both Los Angeles and Montreal, the publisher confirmed today.

We're hearing from multiple sources that they've shut down Visceral Montreal, the studio behind upcoming shooter Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, but EA wouldn't confirm or deny that news.

However, in a statement to Kotaku, an EA spokesperson confirmed layoffs:

"Today EA internally announced some adjustments to select development teams to align staff and skills against priority growth areas, including new technologies and mobile. Many employees are being retrained for new positions; however a small number will be released. These are great, talented people and we wish them well. EA is growing globally, and we expect our headcount to increase this year."

When asked whether Visceral Montreal would shut down, an EA spokesperson said "Not disclosing impact on individual teams or studios."

EA's Frank Gibeau also addressed the layoffs in a post on the company's website:

"EA's leadership on these high-growth platforms allows us to retain and attract the industry's best talent. Thousands of our existing employees have been retrained and redeployed to work on the new platforms and initiatives. But when it is not possible to redeploy a team, we soften the tough decisions with assistance. This week we let some people go in Los Angeles, Montreal as well as in some smaller locations. These are good people and we have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease their transition to a new job."

Visceral Montreal is the developer behind shooter Army of Two: Devil's Cartel, scheduled for release on March 26 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Got the 360 demo. Need to try it out over this weekend in co-op.[DOUBLEPOST=1363413519,1363324384][/DOUBLEPOST]Done with the demo on the 360 in co-op. Enjoyed it. However, it does not occupy the entire screen when in split-screen mode. There is portion of the corner which is blacked out. This is really disappointing. The weapons customisation was awesome. Me and my brother spent 20 minutes customising and testing out the weapon upgrades. My hate for Frostbite 2 engine on the console is even stronger now. The destructible environments is really good. However, the bloom and poor textures effects are really apparent. Not to mention the occasional tearing part.

It was great fun in co-op though. The over-kill option should be re-named as God mode, as you're practically invincible and have unlimited ammo (

). Didn't see the 'Back-2-Back' feature making a comeback in this game, or at least in the demo. It's been a tradition in both the Army of Two titles. I hope they haven't substituted it with the 'over-kill' feature.

Definitely picking this up for the 360.

Allwyn, how's the split-screen mode? As in the display is divided into two screens? Or would the two of you be in the same screen?

Oh man, those back-2-back sequences were amazing! Even the AI player was sensible enough in the previous title. Any morality decision based decisions in the demo?

It's split horizontally and not shared. It makes more sense to have 2 individual screens, as the game has various sequences where you're often separated from your team member and have to operate on your own to re-unite. This wouldn't be feasible in shared mode. Same goes for the on-rail sequences, which was present in the demo.

No morality choices were present in the demo. It was purely action packed. But the weapons customisation is something I'm really looking forward to, as it had a ginormous range of weapons and various upgrades to it. The cool feature during the weapon upgrade section is that you can instantly test out those upgrades by switching to the 'Test mode'. This shifts the screen into a shooting gallery and you can then test your weapons on the targets. Most of the weapons were locked out in the demo, but one could easily tell it definitely had variety. It seemed to be awfully easy, so I'd recommend a slightly higher difficulty level to begin with (if you're fairly familiar with these games on a controller).

Never played any of its previous installments. But after trying the demo for sometime i think these type of games are perfect for a co-op session. The game is visually impressive too with some nice physics and effects. If anybody wants to co-op then let me know I will try to get it then.

I repeat anyone interested for co-op. Completed the demo online in co-op and it was awesome! But i found it a bit easier than other games.:D

The game has got mixed reviews around. Anyways will play the initial bits and figure out. The last two titles were very good and loved the gameplay which felt different from the other third-person shooters.

Fired up the game yesterday night before crashing and finished a couple of chapters from Mission 2. It seems pretty good to me. The combat mechanics remain the same from the previous title except that they seem to have removed back-2-back and have included Overkill. The visuals are fantastic thanks to the Frostbite 2 engine. I was glad that Rios and Salem were present in the game, if not as playable characters.

Will attempt this once I am done with BS Infinite. Not sure why the critics were harsh with this title rewarding low scores barring a very few. Only time will tell.

The game is a tad too short. Although I am yet to complete the campaign, within a short 4 hour span I was able to breeze through the 7 out of 10 chapters (32 missions) on the Medium difficulty in a single sitting.

Anyways, first things first - the game definitely does not deserve such a lowly rating from the critics. I find it a bit harsh that some of them have rewarded the game with a poor score and review as a whole. It could be because Army of Two belongs to the shooter genre and may not be in the leagues of the big ones such as Call of Duty or Gears of War and the likes. There is a lack of varied content in the game but when the more recent Gears Judgment has been rewarded an 8-9’ish score, Call of Duty’s yearly iterations averages 8-9 and TDC gets a lowly 4-5 on a scale of 10, this is really disappointing. If Gears Judgment deserved an 8 (which honestly speaking, it didn't; a 7 should have been appropriate IMO), then TDC deserves a 7 at the very least. Or maybe the reviewers did not get paid by EA after all!

Coming back to the game, the combat mechanics essentially remain the same from the previous titles. The protagonists from the previous titles - Salem and Rios are now NPCs with rookies Alpha and Bravo replacing them. Back-to-back and playing rock-paper-scissors are gone. The momentary invincible mode - Overkill enables both the operatives to slow down time and blast their way with infinite ammo and no health reduction. Weapon loadout before the start of each mission and chapter is amazing, with plenty of weapons to choose and customisations that can be done. Even clothing, hockey masks and tattoos can be customized from a selected list available. Although the visuals are good, I believe the devs. should have stuck to the good ol’ UE 3 instead of the newer Frostbite 2. There are a lot of glitches, missing textures, framerate drops. With UE 3 being a tried and tested engine on the consoles, this could have been easier for the devs. as well. Well, this was a bad move from their part. Enemy AI felt a bit bland - no variety, the brutes go down easily.

There’s a huge unexpected kahaani-mein-twist  towards the start of Chapter 8 - wait for it!

Completed the game yesterday in another sitting. Must have taken another hour or so.

Like I said before, the game definitely doesn’t deserve the low scores and ratings slapped by the critics. The story was good, gameplay was decent with no major improvements over the previous installments (the devs. shouldn’t have traded back-2-back with the Overkill mode IMO), visuals were better but with added glitches and framerate drops and the voice-over was okay. I somehow despise the idea of breach in this game. Opening any door cannot be termed as breaching; my understanding was that those with hostiles behind the doors are breached. Over and above, the AI used to act stupid at times. At one point we were left with the handguns and are supposed to make way from point A to B without alerting the enemy AI. But turns out, my AI partner Beta was standing exposing himself and the AI left unnoticed!

The single major annoyance in the game which also makes it a hell lot easier - auto-aim! Ridiculously implemented for any title I have played till date on both the consoles. Take cover behind an object, aim anywhere close to the enemy AI and BAM, the reticle points straight at him (and 6 out of 10 times, at the head!). How badly can auto-aim be implemented in a game?! This is one of the classic instances. It was also present in Resistance and Killzone I was told, but I never felt so to be honest. There was no option to turn it off either.

Nonetheless, this title is a good time killer. Those who loved the previous two will definitely want to play this one. Esp. for the Overkill mode, I went completely berserk and at times, used to scream when I activated the mode out of excitement! Try this mode with a nice shotgun, makes us an instrument of mass destruction for a brief period.

I so wanted to rip Salem’s head off! I can’t believe that guy was jailed in the end!

Poor Fiona. R.I.P. :’(
