Please please help me

OS : XP sp2, (system config in my siggy)

Problem : The taskmanager always shows both cores of my E4400 using around 46 to 50 % of CPU when idle.

Taskmanager .......... SpeedFan :

One interesting thing I noticed in cpu-z, its reading keeps alternating between the following two every second :
core speed : 2000 MHz , Multiplier x10.0
and
core speed : 1200 MHz , Multiplier x6.0

@1200 ................... @2000

- Is it some kind of intel equivalent of cool-n-quiet working in background ?
How can I stop the dual cores from being half used all the time. Please help guys :(

I can provide any other info + screenshot if it helps.

.

Go to the Processes tab in the Windows Task Manager and sort the processes by CPU, take a screenshot and post it here... Need to know which process is using the CPU?
Yep, That's Intel's Speedstep. The multiplier toggles between minimum and maximum when the System requires more processing power.

virus alert!!

de 97 for sys idle is ok.. that aint an issue...

the proccy alternating is coz of speedstep. you can disable that in ur bios nd see if it makes a diff to the 50% thingy.. am guessing it wont.. if it doesnt.. then the prob is coz of some virus/worm thingy.. get hold of a decent AV such as kaspersky or nod32 nd install em. get a hold of the latest updates.. go to safe mode nd perform a full sys scan.

recommended would be to connect the hdd/hdd's to another system as slaves nd scan them as a whole. coz there is a possiblity of the virus/watever masking de AV from its presence during installation.
