Guys, I usually never pass on forwards, let alone create one, but for once, I thought I might actually type out a mail meant to be forwarded , and hope people propagate it in place of blindly sending out the usual silly forwards.

How many of us think twice before popping an Anacin or for that matter
any Aspirin based tablet at the slightest hint of a chill or fever.
Well, as long as you are an adult, aspirin has not many side-effects,
so it may be a relatively safe practice.
However, if you have a child less than 16 years of age, think twice
before passing one.

A young couple I know had gone to Vizag in the New Year vacations
along with their 4 year old daughter. The young child developed a
mild fever during the holiday and the parents unknowingly put her on
aspirin (perhaps Anacin? I don't know for sure, but the active
ingredient was the seemingly innocous Aspirin)

Unfortunately, they had no idea what was to happen next.
Within days, the fever subsided as expected, but when they were on
their way back to Chennai, the young girl suddenly had a heavy bout of
vomiting. Within hours, the child was in seizures.
They got the child hospitalized as soon as they reached Chennai but
she did not respond to any medication and her condition deteriorated
rapidly.

She progressed into heavy coma and was diagnosed as brain dead yesterday.
She is still on life support and her parents now face the heart
rendering decision of when to pull the plug!

All this in a span of a week!!

The condition that afflicted her is termed as Reye's syndrome.
Though Aspirin is sold as an OTC in our country, there are no labels
to warn customers of its potential effects on children.

If you still think this is just another silly forward, You can google
for Reye's syndrome or refer Wikipedia for more details.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reye's_syndrome

Would appreciate if you could pass on this message either verbally or
by e-mail to all people you know, especially parents with young
children.

Regards,
Abhinav

This is a matter for concern. However, the wiki has this to say -
It is important to note that no studies established a causal link to aspirin or salicylates. The vast majority of children who take aspirin while ill with a virus such as chicken pox or flu do not develop Reye's Syndrome and many children who develop the syndrome did not take aspirin or salicylates. It stands to reason then that other factors, perhaps genetic or biological, must also be involved.

True, but just google for Reye's syndrome, and the vast majority of scholars concur that there is a very strong correlation between aspirin usage and Reye's syndrome in Children...

I have seen a case, and that's the reason I typed the whole thing out

There are other suitable alternatives to Aspirin for children and even if this note could help avoid even one possible case, I guess it'll be worth it

The excerpt below is from National Reye's Syndrome Foundation

the first google result for Reye's syndrome:

reye's syndrome, a deadly disease, strikes swiftly and can attack any child or adult without warning. All body organs are affected, with the liver and brain suffering most seriously. While the cause and cure remain unknown, research has established a link between Reye's Syndrome and the use of aspirin and other salicylate-containing medications.

think the recommended dosage for asprin is not more than 2 a day for kids right.. wonder if the parents went overboard

I don't think there is any recommended dosage of Asprin for children..Just google for "Aspirin and Children" and see what you get

well i use panadol .. milder than crocin etc and theres a recommended dosage for children.. theres even a panadol for children

maybe they should intro it here in india

edit : my mistake this one is paracetamol and not asprin
