We were already aware that ASUS is working on a low cost tablet, lower cost than their budget ASUS Nexus 7 tablet. Enter the ASUS ME172V. The ASUS ME172V is a 7" budget Android tablet which targets a price tag between $129-$149 only.
ASUS ME172V

The ASUS ME172V will build on the existing cheap and powerful Nexus 7 tablet. Scratch that, it de-builds on the Nexus 7. ASUS wants to make a cheaper tablet while maintaining quality and performance. Let's see what the rumor says about it's internals.

ASUS ME172V Internal Specifications

  • VIA WM8950 chipset (Wondermedia)
  • 1 GHz ARM Cortex A9 CPU
  • ARM Mali-400 GPU
  • 1 GB of RAM
  • 7" (1024*600) capacitive display
  • 16 GB of internal storage
  • 1.3 MP front facing camera
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

The VIA WM8950 processor is a single core ARM Cortex A9 based chipset. It's built by Wondermedia, a subsidiary of VIA technologies. The single core configuration is a bit disappointing though. 1 GB of RAM on the other hand, and a higher resolution display than the standard WVGA (800*480) ones found in budget tablets.

16 GB of internal memory seems tad on the higher side for a budget tablet. We wish ASUS makes some modifications and decides to include a dual core chipset instead and up the performance (and handling capability for the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS).

It seems that more and more companies want to make budget Android tablets, take Acer for example.
