ASUS Starice CPU cooler, have a look at this monster.

Shripad

Guide
Ok guys. I was at a store and i saw this monster and i had to buy it. Couldnt resist. I mean once you see this you simply go bizzerk.
I saw the reviews, pics etc etc. But when i saw this baby with my own eyes i was really shocked. None of the pics i saw gave any idea how big this one is. It had to do good job at cooling with this size ;)
So i decided to give it a try.
but for now only pics. I kept it along side 17" Monitor, alongside P4P800Dlx mobo with CPU and HSF installed and on top of wavemaster just so that you get the idea about size.
Results tomorrow hopefully. Will compare it against my XP-90 results. Something tells me its gona be better.

Question: How noisy is it? I can't stand noisy computers, indeed I am thinking of switching to another cooling solution for that very reason.

Hmm...Great.....How much did u get it for??

Waiting for ur results.....cuz alot of ppl r thnkin of buying the xp90.....if these turn out better ...mayb evry1 can get this locally :ohyeah:

I havent put it inside the system yet.
But it comes with fan controller so you can adjust the speed of the FAN. From the reviews if you put the fan at max its noisy, very noisy. But you can put it at medium and still get good results are considerably lower sound levels.
But noise aint big issue as my case when closed is preety silent. And noise never has been an issue to me.
EDIT: Price is 2750 including VAT. But i am sure you can get it cheaper from Lamington road. And yeah XP-90 is almost impossible to find locally. This is widely available.

Its available for Rs 2100 here in Delhi... I didnt buy it because of two reasones... The Noise... The size and weight...

if you know anyone coming from overseas get yourself a [RANK="arctic-cooling.com/cpu2.php?idx=10&disc="]Freezer 64[/RANK] , its one of the quietest cooling solutions out there

Saw one @ casette world yesterday, din't bother to ask the price though ! Looks like a huge jet engine to me ! :P The cooler is also known for noise at high speeds arnd 60 dB+

ok. here are the results with current room temp. Impressive indeed.
Ambient: 32C
XP-90
IDLE: 39C Full load: 44C( with 35CFM CM fan )

Starice
IDLE 35.5C Full load: 40C.

Starice medium Fan speed
IDLE: 36C Full load:41.5C

Full load temp taken after 15 minutes of RTHDRIBL.

And with case close its not that audible. Atleast not with the CM WM cabinet.
I will record a sound clip with FAN at low and high speed and try to host it somewhere for those who really care about noise.
The installation takes some time but its simple enough. Almost same as TT watercooler that i used in past. Same H plate claming.
By the way ASUS as given big motherboard backplate so it supports motherboard.
for now its staying in there.

Done some more testing.
Threw everything i had at it.
Prime, HL2, 3dmark03/05. UT2k3. SuperPi.
Temp never went above 42C with fan set to medium. The only thing that feels odd is looking at it inside the PC. HAve a look :P
Looks like alien inside my PC ;)

funky since you have all the figures and pics how about a proper formatted review ? especially since its a product thats available in the local market

Hey Funky, would I have any probs with a Socket 754 proccy and Asus K8v mobo ? my load temps reach 55"c with the case open and 65"c with closed case...

Nope stock speeds, my case is bad, and also the ambient temps are really high in Mumbai. But even with the case open I get temps of 55"c at loads which I think is a lil high. Am using stock HSF

ur using a 3200 right? & any idea what would the temps be on a stock amd cooler.
With stock cooler i hit 56-57C full load.(overclocked to 2.65Ghz)
With XP-90 Max I have seen is 46C
With this cooler Max i have seen is 42C so far.

@Aces: Well thats hot. But still not alarming. But yeah you can definitely benifit from better cooling and better airflow.
@bottle: Well sure. I will try to put nice formatted result.

What case do you have aces ? If its a generic one get a better one, thermal dynamics have become an important aspect of every system with P4s and AMD 64s these days. If that doesnt work, u might want to consider a custom cooling solution.

I have a uber crap VIP case, and I dont wanna change that atleast now, dont have the time to re-assemble the system if the Starice is for 2.1k will buy that. I dont mind the noise as I use headfones while gaming...

Also the temps in Mumbai is really high especially in the afternoon, where the ambient temps maybe as high as 35-36 "c

Yep these days its really getting hot here.
By the way if you get starice you will have to disassemble anyway. You have to remove the motherboard if you want to use the backplate. if you have the motherboard like newer S939 mobos which came with backplate then no need to remove the motherboard.

if u get this cooler aces let me know the results etc. cause i too am using a k8v mobo & 2800 64bit. load temp max is 48 - 49. but there is too much dirt also on the stock hs. let me know how much diff the star ice makes for u cause i too might consider getting it
