Asus Wireless Router WL-520gu

"I brought this router for 2 main reasons, and it disppointed on both.

One, to be able to connect an external hard disk to the USB port on the router. Second to download Torrents using the Download master sofware.

The external hard disk supported for write mode is only FAT32 format. It does not assign a drive letter, instead an FTP address like ftp:\\192.168.1.1 to access the drive, making any previous mappings etc using drive letter useless(like backup scripts). Trying to double click a .AVI file on this hard disk actually downloads it first to the computer access that FTP site and then opens it.

Download master software crashed everytime I selected Connect to connect to the router.

Support is terrible. Have emailed them and it's more than 24 hrs, still no reply. There tech support forums are also not that active, so no end users have reponded either.

I cannot return the router now due to the 15% re-stocking fee plus return shipment charge. "

newegg review for N13 ...is it the same for WL-520gu??????? ..cant read everything in detail due to exams

if you buy this router to use with the stock firmware, then DO NOT BUY.. look elsewhere as asus firmware is buggy at best..
Even DD-WRT is only a semi-pro solution.. Best is to get the "oleg" firmware (see wl500g.info)..

^^You're taking about WL-520gu right? Because in N13U/N16 I think you can put a HDD on network share.

If yes, then why not go w/ dd-wrt?

you can do that in 520g (and all other 5xx series models) as well..

ok guys two questions..

ill be using the 520gu with my mbp..

easy 2 sync oleg with it? also since there is just one usb port... can i use it as a nas.. (what sort of file systems does oleg support)

and can i only use it as one.. a torrent download OR a nas.. or both??
am i better off at buying a airport extreme base station for a nas?

or since this is hackable .. a more versatile solution since it will also download for me...

and if it only supports fat32 .. how will manage to download large files.. like bluray rips.. iso's bigger then 4gb..

im wondering what to get..:S

@ toxicdrift--- OLEG is the firmware to go for . Use ext3 FS for best results :) and install transmission. Check the lonk on my 1st post (by Te's own vinayga) on how to accomlish that.

yea but will run from osx?? or a windows based pc only ??

i mean once i flash it (from a windows based machine)

can i use transmission to remotely download torrents from osx?

  • The Asus WL-520GU has a 200Mhz Processor (Broadcom BCM5354) and 4MB/32MB of Flash/Ram and supports DD-WRT officially.

  • The Asus RT-N13U has a 385Mhz Processor (Ralink RT3052F) and 4MB/32MB of Flash/Ram and doesn't support DD-WRT officially and no unofficially support as of yet.

  • The Asus RT-N16 has a 533Mhz Processor (Broadcom BCM4718) and 32MB/128MB of Flash/Ram and doesn't support DD-WRT officially, however a dd-wrt firmware for it has been released.

Multitasking (Streaming/BT/Printing/Browsing) on N13U will surely be better than that on a 520GU

Hope this makes you're decision easier.

No they will, read the entire thread properly dude or atleast check their spec sheets.

N13U stock firmware supports BT downloads

^^ Dont just go by the specs. All what I can say is that the Asus stock firmware and download master is not enough mature yet :P

Btw I have bought 2 X 520gu for 2 members in this thread already :)

Local Bangalore members who want this asap can PM me for the details.
