Hi,

I am considering buying the Asus Xonar Essence STX but I am not sure whether it will fit in my current setup. I have MSI P7NGM Digital motherboard with a free PCI-E slot. Even if it does fit I am concerned about heating issues because it will be so close to the graphics card.

Please have a look and let me know if I should buy the Asus Xonar Essence STX or go for the Asus Xonar Essence One.

Thanks in advance.

Your budget is 20 K ?

If you can afford Essence One, go for it. You will eventually end up needing the features present in ONE.

Looks like you have a PCIe 1x slot free above the 16x slot where the GPU is inserted. The STX can go into that slot. There should be no issues w.r.t. heating. I am using the STX in this configuration with a HD 6950 GPU for over 2 years now. Else if you have an unoccupied PCIe 4x slot below the 16x slot, the STX can go into that slot as well.

Besides, the Essence One falls into a different segment altogether and costs a lot more than the STX.

STX will work in your rig. I have been using an STX on top of a 560 TI in a similar configuration as yours without any problems.

If you are gonna do any sort of gaming, chuck the usb. Otherwise for pure audio quality, the essence one will obviously sound better. What speakers/headphone do you have?

More than heating issues you need to make sure whichever card you buy doesnot touch the ram. I had a major issue exactly like this, eventually had to upgrade motherboard to fit the Xonar DX. STX might be bit smaller. Check their official site for length and then measure the length upto the RAM.

Asus site has DX'e length but i can't find the length of STX. I doubt it'll fit on your mobo. Go USB :)

The STX is about 17 cms. I just might have that much space. I think I'll make sure the shopkeeper allows me to return the card, if it doesn't work, and let me get the essence one. Honestly I do believe my rig is outdated but don't wanna upgrade right as I do not need to. I don't play many games. But I DO listen to lossless music. I have Shure SRH440 and I will buy either the M-Audio BX5 D2 or M-Audio AV40 speakers in a couple of weeks time. Will pick up a cooling fan just in case.

Add great sound - good idea.

Add another fan for more noise - not a good idea.

If heat is a concern for you (I wouldn't run a nice card against a hot graphics card) look at some external solution, and something as expensive as the Essence.

Its time to clean up ur machine with a vacuum cleaner - your heat issues will be sorted automatically. My stx in the gaming rig is right beside a Radeon 7970 which can get quite toasty. Its still running fine.
