Atheros Communications, a pioneer in wireless network solutions, is pleased to announce the free availability of the ath9k Linux driver for IEEE 802.11n wireless devices. The ath9k driver will be soon included in the Linux kernel.

Atheros does plan to add access point support to ath9k and to work with the community to enhance and complete access point support in the Linux kernel. It is understood there is plenty of work required on the wireless stack to complete full access point support. Jouni Malinen will help drive this process within the community while Luis helps enhance regulatory compliance in the Linux kernel.
The free wireless driver released by Atheros will work with the following chipsets:
  • AR5418+AR5133
  • AR5416+AR2133
  • AR5416+AR5133
  • AR9280

wow wireless drivers was one of the Achilles's heel for windows.

this sure is a big plus for linux.

also in future kernel versions would ensure peace of mind for linux laptop users.

Nice...slowly hardware support is going better day by day.

soon, in couple of years there will be a log of Tux also with Windows Flag

Hi all,
While this is definitely good news, there is something that you guys need to know or perhaps already know, the 802.11N is still in draft. I'm following it and hopefully the implementation may be passed by year-end. Some of the products may have a way to flash the new code while others may not. So I just hope you guys know what you are buying.

That's all from me :)

nice! I have hard time with my asus mobo's atheros lan card :| had to patch the latest driver code to custom compiled kernel 2.6.26. :S

Atheros HAL Under Free Software License

This week Atheros Communications has made another step forward in enabling their wireless products on Linux. Atheros has released their HAL used for their 802.11a/b/g devices under the ISC. The ISC (or Internet Systems Consortium) is a BSD-derived free software license that is supported by the Free Software Foundation. The Atheros WiFi parts supported by this opened-up HAL include the 5210, 5211, 5211 FPGA, 5212, 5212 FPGA, 5312 WiSoC, 2315 WiSoC, 2317 WiSoC, 2313 WiSoC, 5212/2417, 5416, 9160, AR9100 WiSoC, 9280, and 9285.

Then, after a year, I ask me and you, why such driver continue to don't work or work poorly and badly under Linux. One can think that is because that hardware (in my case the AR9280) is really crap or because the driver is really crap or both.
