AMD's going through some rough times, no doubt about it, but for fanboys of the CPU maker (wait, do CPU fanboys still exist?) here's your feel-good story of the year. The always-thorough Tom's Hardware has pit Intel's 1.6GHz Atom 230 processor against AMD's Athlon 64 2000+, and the results just might surprise you. The 1GHz Athlon (with a core voltage of 0.90 volts and a power draw of just 8 watts) managed to best the aforementioned Atom in both energy consumption and processing power tests. The gurus at Tom's credited the more modern 790G platform and the highly efficient K8 architecture as big players in the Athlon's strong showing, finally deeming said chip "more economical, faster and quieter" than the Atom. We know you're in disbelief -- good thing there are 14 pages of proof waiting in the read link.

Not entirely surprising. I'm running two AMD processors at 0.85V, one is a 4000+ downclocked to 1 GHz, and an LE-1100 at 800MHz (surprised that the reviewers couldn't get it to run at those speeds/voltages). Both work absolutely dandy, though for video one needs to get to at least 1.6GHz for smooth playback of 1080p .mkv files. Along with a 690G, both can handle everyday tasks with nary a hiccup, as long as there's enough RAM in the system. These guys help me cut down my power bill a lot.

^^ One thing they should have tested is the Cool & Quite as well 'coz it automatically reduces my A64 3200+ frequency to 1Ghz... The power consumption is low when downloading & when onload it automatically comes to stock...

it would be nice to know the power consumption with C&C ...

i have a vid of 1.325volts on my e2160..

currently running it at 1.2G 6x multi. all i need is 0.8v vCore from BIOS(thats 0.77 realtime)

rig is more of a browsing/dl rig of late.. never had hickup.

C&Q doesn't work below 5x multi, which is 200x5 for this CPU.

The problem with all intel chipsets is the power draw and poor feature set - the best bet is actually a Via Nano platform, those deliver everything you need in a low-power integrated rig.

i have sempron LE 1150 + nforce 405 chipset board in my download rig but dunno why cool and quiet doesnt work . it works great for general surfing / video etc though , tried it underclocking and was running fine at 1ghz
