here is a copy & paste from a popular website , Ars technica.com
"Andrew Lee, an analyst with TD Securities who specializes in ATI, has said that ATI is the possible target of a stock takeover, according to a report at the National Post (subscription required). ATI's stock saw a much-needed boost at the end of the week, fueling speculation that ATI is possibly being courted or even targeted for a hostile buy. The stock hovered around CAN$14.50 for most of the week, but after a dip Thursday to $14.00, the stock shot up to 15.77, up 8.6 percent for the entire week. It had reached a peak of $15.90, which is still a far cry from the $25 range enjoyed before June, when the stock started to tank. Shares hit their 52-week low on July 7, at $13.90.

Takeover rumors started in June, when the company's third quarter results were less than impressive, and were followed by weak projections for the fourth quarter. Rumors indicate that both AMD and Intel are interested in ATI, as are Broadcom and Texas Instruments.
ATI is in a vulnerable position because delays in their next-gen hardware have left many investors expecting to see NVIDIA dominate the rest of this year, including the lucrative holiday spending season. Nevertheless, ATI has announced that the R520 will be entering full production sometime in the fall, and their deal with Microsoft for the Xbox 360 should earn them some scratch. Indeed, while no one expects ATI to tank in the near future à la 3dfx, the market's lack of interest in ATI is apparent, and the time is right for buying stock if you expect to see ATI recover next year. And if you happen to be a large corporation with loads of cash, you might want to buy an awful lot of that stock."

Muhahahaaaa.....

FanATics what say now?

A few more solid thrashings by Nvidia and ATi may indeed go the 3Dfx way...hope they still put out drivers for you guys.Or else good luck finding drivers on enthusiast forums.:bleh:

WOOAAHH!!!

Hope Undertaker reads this..... will make him very happy....

But it is true.... ATI has suffered a lot.... the X800 series did not do too well and now, nvidia are always onbe step ahead.... SLI, and the next gen cards.... but it all depends on how fast the R520 really is.... if it is as fast as it is rumoured to be, then I guess ATI will bounce back

While you guys academically discuss the merits and demerits of both the co's and its products (As per sid (UT) ATI no merits , only demerits....hehe) i am thinking of the ways to profit from this.;)

Good luck finding cheap geforces.

Nvidia had decent cards at good price points even when ATi was a no show. The GF4 Ti 4200 came out when ATi had virtually no answer to Nvidia and the 8500 was plagued by very serious driver issues. And despite competition, the prices of high-end cards have been increasing.

If AMD/Intel buy ATi I think all its energies will go into the low-cost and integrated core sector.:D

What abt the 9 months when NV had no answer to the 9700 pro and finally came out with the 5800U dustbuster. Go buy that :P. Even if its taken over (which is still major speculation), I doubt if they'll go out of the high end market.

Sop living in the past....
"ATI had no answer 1 bazillion years ago..."
"Nvidia had no answers..."
As I see it, they both stack up pretty much equally nowadays - SM3.0 does not exist at all with ATI and is broken with nVidia (or so u guys have led me to believe - I no longer have much interest in gfx cards).
And to make money
1. Buy ATI options (derivatives)at a low price for a date say 1 year from now (good luck finding that deal)
2. Buy in the future and sell immediately itrw.

The last radeon to have drivers issues was the 7500, I remember each driver update used to be like a free gpu upgrade.
The 8500 was cool, considerably cheaper than the ti500 and just as fast.

Prices have been increasing even in a competitive scenario and you still want ati to dissappear?
You seem like a marketting firms dream come true.

sm3.0 on the 7800gtx is pretty good actually.I won't lie- I hate ATi.

But are there not eerie resemblances between the R520 and Voodoo 6?;)

See the logo?

ATi Logo Sucks! Their Ruby Mascot too!

Compare it to Nvidia's Logo & Nalu or the latest 7800GTX mascot(forgot the name!)

Ati doesn't have even good designers where will they have engineers!

At least Nvidia is at least having a presence in India & employing in good nos.
So Kudos! to Nvidia & f*** off ATi.
